Garfield, New Jersey was the home of the world’s first firearm shirt company in 1892. The business, Rifleman’s Shirt Company, produced high-quality clothing for men and boys who engaged in firearms hobbyism. It was one of the few businesses to survive prohibition by producing patriotic clothing for law enforcement and other duty-bound individuals. In 1932, Rifleman’s Shirt Company merged with another gun shop, Ammunition Inc., to form Armory Sales & Marketing Corp. At armory sales prices were lower than at retail outlets so customers could buy more cheaply and resell at a higher profit margin. Armory sales eventually became an important part of the New Jersey economy thanks to their continued production until 1984 when they closed their doors permanently due to financial difficulties. Today, however, there is a small museum dedicated to rifle shirts in Garfield that preserves this important history. The museum is open every day from 9am to 4pm except Mondays when it is closed due to school schedule changes. Admission is free with no parking requirements and there are limited space so visit ahead of time if you plan on visiting multiple times during your stay in Garfield!

The Garfield Rifle Club was founded in 1885. The club became the Garfield Rifle and Pistol Association in 1886. It changed its name to the Garfield Rifle and Pistol Club of New Jersey in 1889. The club became a member-based organization and held its first meeting at the Burlington Armory on November 3, 1889. The club started using rifles for target shooting at their first Annual Meeting on December 4, 1889. In 1893, the club elected James Halsey as president and James Waddell as secretary-treasurer. In 1895, the Garfield Rifle & Pistol Club of New Jersey merged with the rifle clubs from Camden (New Jersey) and Trenton (New Jersey). On April Fool's Day 1896, theclub changed its name back to the Garfield Rifle & Pistol Club of New Jersey after a formal letter from then-president Halsey that said "We have been reorganized into a separate society for this purpose." In 1899, several members of the GRCNJ formed an All American Shooting Association which later became IPSA. From 1903 until his death in 1934, George Kapp was president of IPSA/GRCNJ. During World War I there were significant military casualties due to gun accidents among civilians living near Battleship Row Naval Ammunition Plant; many civilian survivors demanded that firearms be banned or restricted in order to prevent any more fatalities There were also calls for enactment of laws regulating magazine capacity and safety devices on guns; these calls were unsuccessful however because Congress did not take action until well after World War II when it passed NRA legislation outlawing most types of commercial ammunition sales without prior registration withauthority

Garfield is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. Garfield is located on the South Branch of the Passaic River and has a total area of . It was incorporated as a borough on July 1, 1907. The name Garfield comes from George Washington's plantation in nearby West Egg and perhaps derived from his initials "G W" or "GEORGE". The first recorded settler in what is now Garfield was John Willing who arrived in 1776. His son William inherited land and built a mill hereabouts in 1816 which became known asWillis & Garrison Mills. In 1868 George Washington's grandson James A. Garfield bought all but 6 acres (2 km²) of this land from Willis & Garrison Mills for $200 and renamed it Garfield Park after himself, becoming one of the earliest developers of Camden Township. The first post office opened in Garfield on October 15, 1894 under the name Easton Heights; it closed on November 30th, 1903 due to high postal rates then being charged by New Jersey Transit formail delivered through private carriers like Federal Express instead of state-owned NJ TRANSIT services then available at that time. In 1904 Newark-based real estate developer Nathan Haddon purchased part of Garfield Park with plans to develop it into an upscale suburb called Haddon Heights using funds provided by Garfields mayor Woodrow Wilson Sr.. However these plans never came to fruition because he failed to secure financing for them from either wealthy businessmen or government officials sympathetic to his cause during the Panic Of 1907 which caused many businesses and families to leave town during that difficult time period. On May 3rd 1922–approximately 165 years after George Washington's birth –Garfield Borough granted cityhood status to their newly formed community by adopting a resolution passed by Borough Council vote totaling 9-0 over objections raised by Morrisania Township about its lack of representation within the new entity despite having an estimated population near 20 times that size! At that time there were just 5 inhabited buildings within what is now Garfield including 2 churches (Straits Presbyterian Church (1893), First Baptist Church (1904)), 4 gristmills/mills (Willis & Garrison Mills; Geo Laughlin’s Flour Mill #1; Geo Laughlin’s Malt House #2; Elijah Howe’s Iron Works #1), 1 grocery store/bakery (Fenway Grocery Store(now Macy’s)), 3 residences(Garland Residence(later home of Mayor James A.) Garvin)), 2 schools(Whatley School#1 1908), 1 fire company station&1 police department station(&1 ambulance service). By 1930 there were only 2 residences left within the borders confines of today’s Garfield park while all other buildings had been replaced or demolished since those days including Straits Presbyterian Church which property Ownership reverted back To Jersey City Municipal Services District upon its acquisition subject thereto via eminent domain following riots taking place throughout much portions Of Jersey City resulting In widespread destruction And loss Of Property occuring On July 4th 1920*.* *This information taken From “History Of Camden County: Volume One” By P Giannini ISBN 0-8117-9663-6
Garfield was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1676. The town was named after the Garfield family, who were owners of a farm there. The town had a population of about 100 people when it became a township in 1857. It had a population of 1,500 people when it became an incorporated municipality in 1976.
