Garfield is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,554 at the 2010 census. Garfield is located adjacent to Plainsboro Township and Yorktown Heights Township. It is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Garfield was John Garland who came to the township in 1798 with his family. He built a cabin on the west bank of West Branch Creek and named it Garlandstown after himself and his son John Garland Jr., who had settled there two years earlier. The first school in Garfield was taught by Rev. Amos Kendall from 1802-1804. In 1809, James Fenton founded a gristmill on Millstream Creek, which became one of the most important mills in the area due to its production of flour for Newark's market. In 1824, land was given to be developed into a village called Garrison by George Washington Thomson for veterans of the American Revolution who had fought for Independence including Benjamin Franklin Dyson and Colonel George Washington Hoadley (son of General Nathaniel Hoadley). The first residents were Captain Jonathan Prentice (1797-1867), Mr. Read (1800-1871) and Mrs.Mrs. They erected a house on what is now First Avenue near Ninth Street CornerFirst Avenueand landscaped their lot with lots different colors amalgamating various plants brought over with them from England including Hogarth's "A Concert or An Opera at One time" played by an orchestra assembled from twelve Negroes this performance being part of their subscription for 1st May 1800 priced £5 per seat only 8 remain unknown
