The Garfield-Amsterdam Bridge was built over the Hackensack River on October 21, 1921 and replaced an earlier bridge which had been destroyed by a storm two years earlier. The original bridge had been built around 1900 by contractors for local farmer John Flanders who wanted to connect his farm with those located near Paramus Junction Railroad Station on the Hackensack River Valley Line

The first post office was established at Garfield on October 1, 1827. The first school was built at Garfield on December 15, 1828. Garfield became a borough on April 3, 1897. On November 4, 1938, the Borough of Garfield passed an ordinance to annex portions of Township of Arlington Heights for municipal purposes as well as provide public transportation to both municipalities. On December 14th of that year the annexation took effect and the township portion of Arlington Heights became a part of Garfield.
