In 1951, Roosevelt High School (now known as Roosevelt Middle School) opened in nearby Clifton Park providing instruction to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. In 1970, Mayor James Wilson announced plans to demolish all but one of the original buildings in downtown Garfield – the largest structure remaining – in order to make way for a new shopping center called Park Plaza Shopping Center which would anchor what is now known as Rosedale Boulevard near Interstate 95 north of town. However, this plan met with opposition from many residents who felt their neighborhoods were not being protected enough during construction phase; skirmishes ensued between developers and community activists which continued until 1992 when final demolition took place without any damage done to either property or people living adjacent thereto
