Garfield, New Jersey is home to the oldest rifle shooting club in the United States. The first known organized shooting club was formed on April 15th, 1836 by a group of men led by Colonel John Fisk. From that day until 1865, Garfield had only hunting and fishing as its primary sources of ammunition. In 1865, the first magazine published in America was created in Newark, NJ by John Browning and Sons. At this time, cartridges were made from both lead and brass materials. By 1889, all of America's leading ammunition manufacturers had their operations located in Garfield. Ammunition manufacturing has continued to play an important role in Garfield throughout its history with many companies still operating today. Today, the city hosts one of the largest gun shows in New Jersey and offers a variety of firearms for sale including pistols, rifles and shotguns. During World War II arsenals increased by 25%. From 1940-1945 about 75%of all world production took place in Europe however Japan produced almost half(46%)of all world munitions[4]. After the end of World War II most factories stopped producing arms although some continue under licence through other countries such as South Africa)[5].

Garfield was founded in 1775 by George Washington and is the oldest town in New Jersey. The Township of Garfield was created on December 12, 1874 from portions of Middlesex County. It is named for the then-new U.S. president, James K. Polk who had been elected the year before in a landslide victory over Andrew Johnson. The first settlers were farmers and their families who farmed the land that now includes much of Garfield Township including what is now known as its center—the village of Garfield Heights which was founded in 1815 as part of Newark Township. By 1800, however, many residents had moved to what is now northern Union County because of available land there and because it was within sight of Philadelphia’s growing population and business district. In 1834, John Auld bought 3/8ths interest in the Georgetown Turnpike (later called Route 22) from Samuel Hahnemann which connected Newark with Philadelphia; this donation increased Garfield’s importance as an early transportation crossroads for commuters heading northward or southward toPhiladelphia and other urban areas across Pennsylvania and Delaware River Valley during this period when those regions were still part of British North America’s “Thirteen Colonies” subject to British rule at that time. Alderman John Fenton laid out plans for a new town on May 14, 1840 from a parcel he owned between Easton Road (now 2nd Street) and Springdale Avenue NE; this lot became known as The Gould Place lots after JFenton’s brother-in-law Moses Gould who lived there until his death in 1865. Garfield began to grow rapidly due to its location close to both high-traffic routes connecting northeastern Pennsylvania with southern New Jersey through Newark Airport—a key link during this time period linking these two major economic hubs—as well as access to natural resources such as coal, timber, water power and dairy products which made it an ideal place for agriculture; moreover, young people who found jobs working on nearby farms or manufacturing plants often commute into downtown Newark while continuing their studies at local schools located just east of downtown where they would continue work until evening hours before coming home for dinner or overnight sleep. This type of commuting pattern continued throughout most of the 19th century despite technological advances such as horse drawn carriages which became increasingly popular beginning around 1850 when railways came along – one reason why streets like Main Street became so wide in Garrison during this era! During World War I Garrison lost almost all its buildings but did not suffer any damage thanks to patriotism among its citizens who managed to stockpile food supplies2 In 1948–1949 following passage by Congress establishing guidelines for municipal governments under Title IV OF THE PUBLIC Elementary & Secondary Education Act Of 19553 – including regulations requiring community councils be formed if property values exceed $100 per acre4 – Garrison again experienced growth when developers purchased large tracts near downtown Newark with plans to create new neighborhoods reminiscent of older villages throughout central Pennsylvania5 However unlike earlier times when development occurred primarily within boundaries set by town authorities rather than being spontaneous efforts by individual citizens6 today's majority ethnic enclave consisting largely Pakistani/ Bangladeshi Americans7 continues Garrisons proud history despite challenges encountered daily 8
