The case was brought down by a gust of wind and stored inside of a barn for several years before being brought down again and placed inside of another farmhouse on Broad Street. Eventually, it made its way to the home of Mrs. John Anderton where it sat until 1984 when it finally ended up back at Mrs. Anderton’s house after being donated by her son-in-law Bob D’Amico. Since 1984, Mrs. Anderton has continued to display her old hunting rifle case every year during Gun Show season which is why you can see it today sitting outside on her front porch!

Freehold is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 394. It was formed on April 14, 1868 from portions of South Hackensack and East Orange. The name "Freehold" comes from an Englishmans trade colony founded by Sir John Freehold in 1664. The first settlers to land in what is now Freehold were Quakers who arrived in 1724. The area that would become Freehold was originally part of Hackensack Township. On February 15, 1868, the township portion of Freehold was combined with portions of South Hackensack and East Orange to form a new borough. At the time, freeholders numbered just 10%. Borough President Edwin Sieving served as mayor for three terms (1871-75; 1880-84). The first shops opened in what is now Freehold on July 4th, 1870 when Wm Higginson opened his grocery store at 9 Main Street. In 1872 Samuel Morse set up his Telegraph Company office at 24 Broadway which still stands today as part of the town library system

Freehold Township was established on February 12, 1814, as a result of the United States Government's efforts to provide land for New Jersey settlers. The township was named in honor of General George Washington and his wife Martha (née Livingston). In 1834, Freehold underwent a municipal reorganization which included the addition of six other townships within its boundaries: Amboy Heights, Belleville, Caldwell, Chesterfield Township, East Brunswick Township and Hackensack. These boundary changes were made because of land fraud and disputes over who had the right to sell land in Freehold Township. The population of Freehold township increased rapidly from its initial enrollment of only 100 residents in 1814 to 2,000 by 1830. According to the 1850 census,[1] freeholders made up almost half (49%) of the township's population; farmers made up another 33%, while families with servants numbered 10%. This growth was due primarily to immigration from Eastern Europe and northern Africa. Slavery also played a significant role in this development; during the early 1800s, many freeholders were able to purchase slaves or keep them as indentured servants. By 1870, however, slavery had been abolished throughout most of America and many Freehold residents had become abolitionists. The decline in manufacturing activity during World War II led to a decrease in population size and an increase in poverty. However, recent economic growth has caused much progress to be made within Freehold Township since its inception as a municipality more than 150 years ago. Today, there are numerous cultural events held annually within the township – such as Folk Festivals – that inspire community engagement and identify new opportunities for community involvement throughout the year.
Freehold was one of the original towns in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The first settlers were Dutch and British colonists who came there in the mid-17th century. It became a part of the United States of America in 1776. The town was founded on August 16, 1756 by Colonel George Washington and General James Monmouth from nearby Upper Township, which had been purchased by Washington from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. In 1763, Freehold became one of the five original municipalities within Middlesex County. The incorporation date for Freehold is not known but it likely occurred before September 1, 1766 when all seven municipalities within Middlesex were granted their own charter by Governor John numerical Morris. In 1834, Freehold's population approached 3000 people and on December 15 that year it received aMA immigration grant to admit Chinese immigrants into this country pursuant to Act 10 of 1833 which targeted "foreigners residing here without proper documentation." As a result of this granting, Freehold became one of only two American towns with an extensive Chinese community (the other being Edison). On October 9, 1928 Freehold’s first public service opened with theOpening Day Program at Stroudsburg Manor Park. A new Public School building was completed in 1929 and served as the town’s school until 1974 when Ridgewood High School opened adjacent to Stroudsburg Manor Park after being built using funds donated by Local Businessman Harry Ladd & Mrs. Anna Gilmore . The property along Ridgewood Avenue once housed what is now known as Ridgewood Mall which open its doors in 1966
