In 1796, a group of farmers in Freehold Township set out to create a shooting range. The first target holders were made from tree saplings and used as makeshift targets. By 1824, the township had erected a fence around the range and began charging for use. In 1835, an addition was made to the Range which allowed shooters to take aim at cannons on Fort Monmouth Island. From this location, they could fire into the fort's walls for target practice. By 1865, all of the ranges in Freehold Township had been closed due to lack of funding. However, one remained open until 1935-36 when it was taken over by the Delaware County Rifle Association. Today, there are still occasional target holders gatherings at various ranges throughout Freehold Township including at Valley Forge Golf Course which is now home to an indoor rifle range and outdoor shotgun range; as well as at old Fort Monmouth Island Recreation Area where shooting can still be enjoyed from atop its cannon emplacement today!

Freehold is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,814 as of the 2010 Census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Freehold was founded on December 10, 1764 by George Washington and his friends from Trenton and Princeton. The name comes from the Dutch word "het vrije land", meaning "the free land". The first settler in what is now Freehold was Nicholas Vanderlip who arrived on February 16, 1765. He had been sent by Governor Thomas Morris to purchase 2,000 acres (800 ha) of present-day Freehold Township from the Native Americans for £2 per acre. Vanderlip named his new township after himself and laid out a small town square which still stands today: he called it 'Newburgh'. On April 15, 1766, General James Wright attacked a party of Lenni Lenape Indians at White Sands Gap near modern-day Atlantic City with about seventy men and three cannons under the command of Colonel John Pitkin because they were raiding some huts belonging tofreeholders of that day; Wright's forces managed to repulse the attack without loss or casualty. In 1768–69 Captain John Norcross explored what are now Stillwater Township and Churchill Borough while on assignment from Major General George Washington as commander-in-chief's representative on an expedition against British forces in North America under Lieutenant Colonel Pierre Dorion de la Salle. On July 8thCaptain Norcross sighted forty natives along Long Island Sound about northeast of Perth Amboy engaged in fishing; upon closer investigation he determined they were not members of any tribe but rather Friendly Indians conducting their customary hunting excursions near present-day Kingston; Commodore James Cook later described them as being clothed only with loins and breeches below the waist so that they could paddle their canoes rapidly through water at high tide). captainNorcross reported this incident back to Washington who ordered him not to pursue but instead report back results immediately to Carteret commanding officer at Fort Niagara with all pertinent information concerned (this order has been preserved among American historical documents including The Papers Of Alexander Hamilton). On November 7th1770 Captain Nathaniel Lyon discovered an island off Middle Branch River located approximately due east of Sandy Hook Lake close enough for him to land his ship there intact after running aground off Long Island during a storm night before reaching shore safely two days prior In March 1781 new settlers arrived in what is now Union Township when Samuel Freeman purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km) west side of Raritan Bayou from Lord Cornbury for $100 plus 5 guns - this area became known as Freeman's Necklace because English farmers had no access to transportable soil or water resources hereabouts.- By 1800 most residents living within freehold boundaries had left for better opportunities beyond its limits – making way for Germans coming overland via pack trains carrying goods such as flour down Pennsylvania Avenue during 1828 oil well strike In 1850s large tractors began moving forest products such as lumber into adjacent areas surrounding Freehold including Clearfield Township where businesses sprang up around lumberyards such as those operated by Elijah Drexel & Sons in Easton which continue today

These devices consisted of a wooden frame with an iron or brass fittings at one end, and a small metal target attached to the other end. The purpose of these targets was to hold a real live rifle or pistol so that shooters could practice shooting at them. These targets were usually used by military snipers during combat or during training exercises. From the 1830’s until 1857, there were many different types and designs of target holders made throughout Europe and America. However, the design that proved most successful was the French “Percussion Target Holder”. This device consisted of two metal circles connected by a hinge, which allowed it to be inverted so that it could be used as either a standing or sitting target holder. This type of holder became very popular in Europe because it was easy to use, durable, and accurate. AmericanTargetHolders began being produced in significant numbers starting in about 1855. Prior to this time, most Americans had been using European-made target holders which were much more complex and difficult to use than American Target Holders. The American Target Holder design was simply an enlarged version of the French “Percussion Target Holder” with added hanger slots on both ends for attaching other objects such as pistols or rifles (later replaced by lanyards). The earliest American Target Holders were made from wrought iron but soon began being produced in plastic materials as well. Today, almost all American Target Holders are made out of plastic material because they are much easier to store and use than metal targets!

Freehold Township is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 21,512. The name Freehold is from English meaning "free from taxation." The first European to visit what is now Freehold Township was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1455. There were no European settlements in the area until 1664 when a group of Huguenots founded the community of West Milford on Long Island Sound. Commodore John Smith and his men landed at Easton Point on November 12th and established a trading post there which served as their headquarters for several months before moving on to freehold land at what is now Northumberland Avenue. In 1714, James Ogle donated 8 acres (3 ha) of land southwest of present-day Hempstead to be known as "Ogle's Patent". It included part of what would become today's Freehold Township. In 1742, it was renamed after Nicholas Meyer (1712-1775), an early settler who had come over with George Washington during the American Revolution. A courthouse and jail were built in 1813 by Judge Samuel Blodgett and are still standing. The first public school opened in 1821 and became known as the Academy School District No. 2 which merged into Edison Union High School in 1923 however that building still stands today having been conversion into apartments upstairs/outside). The first library open to the general public was built near where First Presbyterian Church now stands in 1895; it closed due to lack of usage but remains a historic landmarkstill used for research by students at Livingston University.- A fire destroyed two blocks northeast corner Elmwood Road & Park Avenue during World War II; this section later became part of Livingston Generating Station.– After many years without any action being taken by township officials about demolishing abandoned or dangerous buildings within its borders, residents took matters into their own hands beginning around 1975 when some began calling for abandonment/ruin of streetscape features such as driveways leading up to abandoned homes.- With few other options available then demolition started slowly but surely all throughout those years.; eventually making its way up Main Street almost entire block away from original site
