Freehold is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to see Freehold was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 on his way from Venice to New York City. In 1664, John Woolridge charted the course of the Raritan River and named it after his home country Freehold in Essex County England. The name "Freehold" is thought to be derived from this fact or as an allusion to how Englishmen had obtained title deeds to parcels of land south of Passaic River and east of Hackensack Lake without paying rent or money down. In 1717, Nicholas Denby purchased 1/4 mile (1 km) square (now known as Township Line Road) northeast of present-day Freehold from William Livingston for $2 horse skinners worth $10 sterling. He donated it to the borough for public use as per Resolution Passed by Council Februarii 14th 1718: "It Ordered that Nicholas Denby's donation be continued unto this Borough forever." In 1837, a group of farmers organized themselves into a society called the Hudson Hopickers and platted what is now known as township line road on their land which they then sold off piecemeal over many years until they got their hands on enough valuable property together to form what became freehold township in 1854 according to one source. At that time there were only 22 residents living in freehold township with an area size of just . The first white settler arrived in 1865 when Augustus Biddle bought some land north of present day Freehold from Abram Vanderlip for $5 cash and built a cabin there before selling it two years later for $40 more than he had paid for it.
