The Township of Freehold, New Jersey was formed on April 3, 1777 from the portions of Middlesex Township and East Brunswick Township. The township was named for Sir George Washington. In 1874, Freehold became a part of the newly created Union County. On December 12, 1985, Freehold's boundaries were expanded by adding the townships of Belleville and Elizabethtown. On October 15, 1990, Freehold became a part of the new state of New Jersey. The township is located in northern Monmouth County and includes all but one village: Farmingdale. It is bordered to the north by Sussex County and to the east by Ocean Township; its southern border is formed by Delaware River estuary. The population as of 2000 was 24,919 people living in an area that has a total land area of 37 square miles (112 square kilometers). As of 2002 it had been 25,878 people. Freehold's history dates back to at least 1628 when two families from Perth Amboy set up their farmstead on what is now called Indian Hill Road near what is now Elmhurst Avenue (now Route 29). In 1629-30 George Clinton bought 8 acres around present-day Spring Lake from John Day for £5 sterling plus 10% interest which he paid over several years with "a small bagatelle" or "token" until he received full title in 1634 when he conveyed 1/2 mile (1 km) wide strip along present-day Route 9W between Spring Lake reservoir and Elizabethtown Mill Pond through his wife’s brother Thomas Warner who also held some rights thereto viz., “the Patent Right” adjoining Elizabethtown miller John Davenport’s estate thereabouts having been abandoned as late as 1689…. Mrs Warner died without issue in 1700 so her share devolved to her husband whose heirs did not take possession till after his death…. For many years past no evidence has ever surfaced connecting any member of this family directly with colonial North America but they did play an important role in early American life….. By 1750 about 250 whites lived hereabouts…….. Most residents were Dutch Immigrants who founded mills such as those at Elizabethtown and Spring Lake while others came either directly or indirectly from Eastern Europe under Potters & Carpenters Acts…. By 1800 only about 50 white adults still lived here…………….. This community slowly declined throughout most of the 19th century due largely to high rates of illiteracy among its inhabitants coupled with encroachment by forces outside their control…." Farmingdale Village however experienced growth starting in 1830 when Swedish immigrants started farming there after moving across the Delaware River into Monmouth County from Swedeskland –today known as Swedenborg Heights – following religious services conducted on Staten Island during Holy Week aboard vessels headed for Swedeskland……………………………………… The first farmer I located living within sight todayof Farmingdale Village circa 1830 was Jacob Bensen who resided just east side road @ junction w/the Susquehanna River opposite Georgetown Common where Indians traded furs……………………………………….. In 1835 Revd Moses Parsons established Presbyterian Church here……………………………………… Nathan Grier built home north # end lot @ intersection w/ house standing today adjacent to Exeter Street Railroad Station prior to 1860…. Beginning about 1850 Lowenbeck ran tavern @ corner where Manning Boulevard & Main Street now stands……………………………………….. On November 4th 1860 Revd Elisha Goode organized agricultural society herewith purchase OF 5 rods @ $15 each lot FROM David Rankin (& 2 more lots) Richfieldown Rd thence southwesterly along said route To freeholder 3rd class………………………………………. Mr Rankin donated land grant including future parts Of Farmington Hills & Pequannock Twp which compose Maplewood development today................................................................................. In 1865 Abraham Griggs purchased 10 rods @ $25 each lot From Ebenezer Wexler main line thence easterly along said route To freeholder 3rd class………………………………......... With increasing numbers coming streaming into this area during the mid 1800′s various farms began being erected herein including: Wm Higginson owneth large farmstead lying northeastof present day highway betweenElizabethtown&SpringLakereservoir&Mill Pond circa 1868; Pte Saunders farmhouse situated southeastofthat same locality ; Chas Chandler & Geo Cook leased large tract near ElizabethTown Mill Pond around 1870; Agrarian Society sold shares open NIGHTLY at 7 p m thru post office box #2154 Orchard View Ave SE throughout countrywide railroad journey starting at Trenton Junction then running northwest trending toward Springfield via Factory Line Railroad until arriving here late evening or early morning………………………………....... The Swedes arrived in 1626 and called it Staten Island. In 1764, parts of what is now Sussex County were annexed to New Jersey. In 1821, the state was divided into two portions by the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolutionary War and West Jersey became part of New York State while East Jersey became part of Pennsylvania.
