The population reached 1002 residents on November 10th when they voted unanimously in support of annexing Monmouth County with exception of two residents who abstained: Abraham Jaffe and Julius Weinreb. The Second World War changed all that as guns were tightly controlled by government officials following Nazi Germany's rise to power. In 1943, New Jersey passed legislation prohibiting citizens from possessing any type of firearm except shotguns or rifles within one mile of any military installation (a measure later repealed). However, some people continued purchasing handguns for personal defense outside city limits until 1968 when New Jersey legalized open carry again statewide effective January 1st thanks to efforts spearheaded by then Governor Thomas Kean Jr.. In 1702, John Woolridge claimed land at Vereziano for England and renamed it "Freehold Township". The township became part of Hunterdon County when that county was formed in 1821. In 1832, three brothers founded the Freehold Dredgewick woolen mill which remains one of the largest mills in New Jersey today. For many years Freehold had a smallpox vaccine factory operated by Drs. Moses Kapp & Sons until 1943 when all US production stopped due to World War II regulations restricting exports of military supplies to Japan In 1951, Bechtel Corporation built what is now known as Bechtel Tower in downtown Freehold with its thenlargest floor space ever occupied by a single company From 1951-1984 there was also an aluminum plant at this location called Alcoa Freeport Aluminum Company which employed over 10 thousand people across three campuses near this location before eventually closing its doors due to economic conditions

Freehold was a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. It was formed on March 14, 1814 from the portions of Hackensack Township east of the Passaic River. The name Freehold is derived from the Dutch word vrijheldaal (freeholding field). The first settler in what is now Freehold was Nicholas Lowenfels. He and his family arrived from Germany in 1764 and started to farm near where they currently live. By 1800, there were about 60 families living in Freehold Township. In 1814, the township was created as part of Bergen County when it was organized. As one of its first tasks, the county commissioners decided to build a courthouse at what is now Route 9 near present-day Uniondale. The building cost $6,000 and it opened on October 1, 1815. It served as the court house until 1865 when it burned down. In 1830, Freehold Township had a population of 553 people; by 1840 it had grown to 1,045 people. In 1850, freeholders made up just over half of all residents; by 1860 they were only 31%. However, during Reconstruction freeholders played an important role in politics and economy because they controlled many landowner elections that helped improve conditions for black Americans after Reconstruction ended in 1865. After World War II most freeholders became Again Republicans or independent Democrats while some continued to vote Democrat until 1990 when Republican Party control came into play within Freehold Township

Freehold Township was organized on March 1, 1814 and named for Sir Edward Freehold, who had been appointed by the New Jersey Legislature as a commissioner to inquire into land grants in that township. The township was originally divided into two sections; section one was organized on July 1, 1814, while section two remained unincorporated until it became part of Freehold Township on March 1, 1814. The first public school in the township was built in December 1830. On February 14, 1850, an act to create Burlington County took effect and included Freehold Township. On September 25 of that year, Burlington County formed from portions of Middlesex County and Freehold Township became a part of that county. On November 3rd of that year, an act to give townships their present boundaries took effect and freehold Township ceased to exist within the new county limits. The first settler in what is now freeheld Township was John Soderstrom which arrived in 1797
