Freehold is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 15,569 at the 2010 census. The name "Freehold" is derived from the Dutch word vrijheid (freedom), which in turn comes from the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The Dutch colony of New Netherland was founded by Hendrick Corstiaensen and Jan de Vries on February 9, 1624 as an attempt to establish a fur trade between Europe and Asia with the goal of extending English control over all North America. On December 12, 1629, Gov. Thomas Dongan granted Huguenot refugees land east of Newark in what is now Freehold Township. In 1714, after the French and Indian War ended, freeholders in Bound Brook Township agreed to cede their rights to Freehold Township so that its status as a separate township would not be affected by developments within Bound Brook Township. In 1834, when Abraham Beall purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land near where he later built his estate called Bellefonte for $2 per acre (€0.70 per sq m), it became part of Freehold Township; this area extended into present-day East Orange and West Orange municipalities before being annexed by those municipalities in 1972. On March 14th 1865Freehold's first school opened with sixty students grades K-8 attending daily classes until September 25th 1870 when it closed due to budgetary problems caused by the Civil War raging around them during that time period; however one day later on March 15th 1865 two more schools were opened: one for girls only known as Mrs Phelps' School and the other for boys only known as Mr Price's School which continued operation until January 1st 1876 due to budget cuts brought about by Andrew Johnson's administration during that time period One hundred years ago today on October 11th 1916 Union Soldiers killed six men - three farmers working their fields outside town limits while another five were occupying an outbuilding nearby used for storage purposes; this event is commemorated annually with a memorial service held at Fort Monmouth National Monument located just north of town center

The name "freehold" comes from early Dutch settlers who purchased land at the end of each township line in New Jersey and then sold it back to the government for tax reasons. The area now known as freehold was first developed by Europeans as part of Elizabethtown Township (now called East Rutherford). On November 12, 1664, a group of English investors founded what would become Freehold Township on lands that they had acquired from the native Lenape people. The town's first settlement was built on a peninsula extending into Hackensack Bay and named after its initial backers - Sir George Coghlan and Sir John Popham - both men who were British citizens. In 1849, Freehold Borough was established as part of Bergen County when portions of Elizabethtown Township were annexed to form that county. In 1874, all but one block in Freehold were added to Bound Brook Township; this block remained within Freehold until 1954 when it became part of Union City. In 1951, Battery Park City was established adjacent to Bound Brook Township and began attracting residents away from downtown Newark; by 1990, mostboundbrooktoworkershadlefttheboroughforthatcity.
