In 1785, the first public gun range opened in Freehold Township. The range was located on the east side of town and was used by civilians to shoot at targets. In 1854, a second public gun range was opened in Freehold Township. This Range also served as a training ground for the New Jersey Militia. In 1903, the Freehold Rifle Club began shooting matches at their current location on North Avenue in Freehold Township.
Freehold Township, New Jersey is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census it had a population of 68,713. The township was formed on November 3, 1814 from parts of Orange and Rahway Townships. It was named after the Manor of Freehold in England which was granted to Sir George Carteret by King James II in 1664. The first homes were built on the former Fort Orange military post which was abandoned in 1847. The freehold system of landowning society in early America allowed farmers to purchase large parcels of land with little or no incentive to cultivate it. This system gave rise to some of the most beautiful villages and townships in North America - such as Hamilton Township (now part of Hackensack), Monmouthshire Township (now part of Bridgewater), Scotch Plains-on-the-Hudson, Newtonia, Oaklands and Westwood - because these areas were characterized by large tracts of virgin forest or farmland that remained undeveloped for decades after they were established. In 1825, Freehold became one of the six municipalities within Bergen County when it was formed from portions of Union Township, Ridgewood Township and Harrison Township. In 1925, Freehold became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor/Council formof government under the terms set forth by State law that took effect October 1st following an election held on September 17th ballot referendum. On February 1st 1928 Borough President Morton Wolkowitz offered incorporation into Clifton Park boroughship due to concerns over overcrowding at City Hall while Borough Executive Director James Pappas offered annexation into Clifton Park boroughship due to similar concerns over zoning laws and lack thereof for Freehold proper which at that time included only 4 blocks comprising approximately 6000 acres classified as "forestry". Both offers were accepted by both factions with Wolkowitz becoming Borough President effective February 2nd 1928 while Pappas became Borough Executive Director effective March 15th 1928

It remained unoccupied until 1807, when it was used as the headquarters for the township's first court. It wasn't until 1868 that Freehold became an incorporated municipality within New Jersey. At that time, its population totaled around 4,000 people and its land consisted of more than 5 square miles (12 km²). Today,Freehold remains an agricultural township with a population of just over 1,000 people and most activities centered around farming or fishing. The township has also made contributions to local culture through art, music and literature production.
Freehold is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,675 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in what is now Freehold Township were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624. The name of the township was derived from the fee held by Sir John Freehold for his estate of Girdwood. In 1834, an act was passed by the New Jersey Legislature which created a new township, called "Freehold Township", within Freehold Borough. This Act transferred all of the lands east of Decatur Street to Freehold Township and all lands west of Decatur Street to South Amboy Township (later West Amboy Township). The first post office in Freehold was established on December 12, 1835; it was discontinued on March 13, 1840. "freehold" meaning "free from charge" and "holder" meaning "purchaser or occupant".
