Freehold Township is a township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. The townships of Freehold and East Brunswick form the eastern border of the township. The first humans to live in what is now Freehold Township were those who migrated from Hunterdon County some 10,000 years ago. They were farmers and hunters who hunted game in the area that includes present-day Uniontown and North Brunswick. One of the first farms in what is now Freehold Township was built by Captain John Smith on his landing at Point Lookout during 1609 as part of the English colony of New Netherland. In 1812, James Yonge purchased land east ofpresent-day Uniontown from Nicholas Astor for $200 cash plus duties on all goods imported into America through that port during that year. This land became known as "East Brunswick", later renamed "Freehold". In 1814, when Isaac Brock bought some additional land across River Raritan from Nicholas Astor for $1,500 cash (the purchase also included a ferry service between East Brunswick andPoint Lookout), he changed freeholdership from Astor to Brock so as to make it easier for future settlers to move into his holdings without having to get approval from their original freeholder. A post office called Dover was established in 1834, but it closed within two years because no one wanted to carry mail overriver on their horses or camels. A new post office called Dover Heights was opened in 1835 and remained open until 1957 when it too closed due to high postage rates charged by NJ Transit. In 1870, three men named George Stephenson founded a wagonmaking company named Stephenson & Son near where current-day Uniontown Road crosses Delaware Creek; this company manufactured wagons for several other companies before going bankrupt in 1876. However, this story does not end there: Two years later another wagonmaker named Stephenson founded anew wagonmaking company just outside Freehold which became known as Stephenson Bros.; this company continued manufacturing vehicles until 1923 when it merged with another wagonmaker named Stevens Manufacturing Co., becoming Stevens Machine Works Incorporated (SMW).
