Freehold is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It has been part of the Bergen County municipality since 1874. The name "Freehold" comes from the Dutch word vrijheld (free), meaning "to be free from any control." The first people to live in what is now Freehold were farmers who arrived in 1764 from Holland. By 1800, Freehold had a population of about 1,000 and a post office. In 1812, landowner Samuel Dillingham donated 124 acres (50 hectares) of land to the township for use as a town square. On July 1, 1814, Freehold incorporated as a borough with a population of 592 residents; it remained an agricultural township until it became an urban borough on January 1, 1976. WhenBergen County was formed on April 12th 1874 by merging portions of Essex and Hudson counties, Freehold became one of its original townships. The Borough may have originated because there were few developed areas within freeholders boundaries which led to tension between the two municipalities over development rights On November 6th 1938 Freeholder voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Passaic Township due to concerns about housing shortages within Bergen County and lack of jobs available in Freehold itself This vote did not go through however because Passaic Township felt that would have created too much competition for their services In 1949 when Bergen County was merged into new Jersey Shore Regional Municipality following the local government reform movement within New Jersey these tensions increased as bergen county sought more autonomy During this time many residents left for Paterson or northern Middlesex counties where job opportunities were better .
