He named it Naxos after his native village in Lombardy, Italy. In 1664, Samuel Carteret granted land to the Dutch settlers in what is now Freehold Township and part of Hackensack Township. The town began as a farmstead with ten families and grew rapidly into a community with over two hundred residents by 1750. In 1814, the people of Freehold petitioned for township status and were granted it by the New Jersey Legislature. In 1833, Freehold became an incorporated municipality under its own government when it absorbed portions of Perth Amboy and Millville townships. He town reached its peak during World War II with an overall population over nine thousand during 1945-1946; however, due to natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy (2012), freehold's population declined slightly to 896 at the 2010 census
On September 14, 1764, the township of Freehold was organized. It was part of Middlesex County and its population was just over 2,000. The first post office in Freehold was established on October 6, 1801. On January 1, 1837, the township became a city with a population of over 10,000 people.
