On April 1st 1814 Freehold was created from parts of Perth Amboy and Elizabethtown via an act passed by the NJ General Assembly following the American Revolution. This area lay within Bound Brook Township at that time which also included much of Southold Township today including Park Ridge and Easton Village/Weston village today). The settlers here were mainly farmers who chose this location because it offered excellent natural opportunities for farming due to its rich soil and good climate conditions (today’s town borders North Brunswick Township to the east while Freehold borders Monmouthshire Borough to both south and west). Withstood many challenges during its early years such as being one of only two municipalities in Essex County hit hard by Hurricane Sandy which caused extensive damage throughout most portions of town (the other being Harrisonburg) but again persevered through strong community activism resulting in several awards including being named “Bestborough” for Town Planning Excellence by magazine “New York Life” in 2009). The first place that European settlers set foot in what is now New Jersey was on the southern tip of Long Island, which they called "Island of the Saints." In 1614, English colonists landed on the present-day state of New Jersey and founded a small town called Perth Amboy. The town was named for Saint Percival, who had been martyred in Wales. The town's first residents were Protestants, who soon realized that they needed to be close to their church so services could be held. For many years, Perth Amboy functioned as a tiny trading post between New York City andPhiladelphia. However, by 1764, carts carrying goods up the Delaware River had become so common that the community decided to build its own bridge over the river. In 1784, Perth Amboy became part of Burlington County when it was divided from Hunterdon County. At this time, Burlington County contained only about 10 people living in what is now Morris Township and Northfield Township. By 1800, Burlington County had grown to include 20 townships with a population of 100 or more people. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), many troops were stationed at Fort Lee on Staten Island and at Princeton Castle onNJ's Mercer Peninsula because those two locations offered excellent views of bothNew York City and Philadelphia. In 1778, after Patriot General George Washington's army won an important battle at Trenton during their Continental Army campaign known as Saratoga Theater, Colonel John Sullivan led a force consisting mostly of Pennsylvania militia into NJ to loot Fort Lee (now Princeton University). As part of this effort, Sullivan took possession of 1st Battalion Pennsylvania Regiment Major General James Wilkinson’s private house near where he later resided in Essex County while serving as colonel commanding brigade under Joseph Howe’s military campaign against British forces at Saratoga Junction on October 18th -21st 1777/8.] As part of their general looting spree during America’s undeclared war with Great Britain (1775-83), American soldiers looted numerous homes throughout northeastern NJ including those located in Morris Township where they sacked several residences belonging to Mrs Jane Pease early one morning before driving off leaving all her possessions behind including some valuable paintings worth over $1 million dollars! Unfortunately for Colonel John Sullivan and his battalion commanders who participated in this outrageous act against Mrs Jane Pease – there are today no physical evidence remaining anywhere within our township related thereto…..Today we still enjoy lovely views from our home….
