The first reference to Freehold is in a deed dated February 2, 1675, from Nicholas Aspinwall of Paterson to John Smith of Monmouth County. The land included what is now the city of Newark. In 1755, Freehold became part of Hunterdon County when it was formed from parts of Middlesex and Union counties. In 1828, Freehold entered into an agreement with Morris Township to become one unit. The township was formed out of portionsof Hunterdon and Union counties. On October 24, 1850, Freehold voters passed an ordinance creating a board of education for the town. This Board sponsored public schools until May 1, 1858 when they were replaced by a new school board which operated under the auspices ofMorris Township schools until that date. On December 3rd 1870 residents voted to merge into Morristown as part-time residents had increased rapidly since 1857 and there were concerns about overcrowding in City Schools which were not able to keep up with population growth alone
Freehold is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 34,539. The borough was formed on July 1, 1814 from portions of North Union Township. It became part of the new county on January 2, 1908. On November 14, 2016 Freehold voters passed a referendum to become a city within the township limits.

Freehold is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It formed from the merger of two villages: North Freehold and South Freehold. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Passaic County were Dutch settlers who established a trading post at Knappstown (later Amboy) in 1664. In 1713, George Washington passed through on his way to battle the French at Saratoga and halted for the night near Freehold Township, where he stayed for several days before continuing on his journey. A group of Englishmen under Lieutenant Colonel John Woolnough explored and surveyed portions of what is now Passaic County on October 25, 1717. The first hacienda or plantation was founded by Mariano de Torres y Vega in West Orange Township (now East Orange). In 1834, sawmills started up around Townships One and Two with new owners opening their mills during the 1830s as prices for wood began to drop due to Panic of 1837. By 1840 there were over twenty sawmills operating in the township alone; these became known as "Old Milltown". In 1850, four more grist mills opened; these became known as "New Milltown". The opening of the Erie Railroad reached Freehold Township on December 5, 1857; this created an immediate boom in business which continued until1863 when Railroads stopped running through freehold because of political reasons unrelated to economics. After that time many businesses closed down because they could not compete with larger towns that had access to better transportation facilities. A few remaining businesses thrived into the 21st century including Carpet stores/ notions store/ butcher shop etc., bakeries/ food Lion's Den taverns along with a few other small businesses but most residents today rely largely upon services provided by large universities such as Monmouth University or Rutgers University located just outside town limits providing research opportunities for students within easy reach or other shops and services available within walking distance like pharmacies etc., making it difficult if not impossible to find anything specific about Freehold's past although some artifacts can be found scattered around town limits like old school desks from Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade used by employees at local grocery stores throughout those years while most residents are more than happyto provide any information they may have about their ancestors either living locally or having been born and raised here
On July 1, 1764, the British Province of New Jersey came into existence as a result of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. The treaty resulted in the cession by Great Britain of all her North American possessions east of Quebec to France. As a result, at least 10% of present-day New Jersey was acquired by French Canadians who were given land grants in return for their allegiance to France. The province's first governor, James Smith (1724-1776), made an effort to maintain order and prevent French Canadian settlers from encroaching on Dutch and English landholdings. He also tried to attract Scotsmen and Irish immigrants who were interested in entering Protestant America but found no welcome there. In 1772, Governor Smith conferred upon Moses Norris (1728-1815) the honorific title "Governor and Father" in recognition of his distinguished services as both a settler and legislator during this early period in New Jersey's history. Norris helped secure passage of the Statute Book Act which granted voting rights to Black American men and women; he also sponsored legislation providing funds for public education. In 1775, after days of peaceful protests by colonial settlers against what they saw as self-serving actions by Governor Smith, violence erupted when troops under Colonel John Mason entered Trenton with orders to disperse colonists who had assembled there to demonstrate against what they saw as British tyranny. Afterward, Cornwallis ordered that all Native Americans within 2 miles (3 km)of any British military encampment be rounded up and put into slavery or killed without distinction according to their rank or race... Norris successfully lobbied Parliamentarians not only for passage but also for increased funding for public education throughout New Jersey so that its citizens could better compete with those living elsewhere on Long Island or Massachusetts Bay Colony. Norris' efforts paid off; within two years after his appointment as governor, school enrollment across all five counties had reached parity with that in Boston... Norris is considered one of the most successful governors from this era in New Jersey because he developed policies thatsupported economic development while maintaining order."
