In 1845, a group of farmers in Freehold began to build a sawmill on the Hackensack River. The mill was successful, and the farmers continued to build mills until 1902. In 1892, the first electric service was provided in the township.
Freehold is a town located in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 382. The historic center of Freehold is located within the town limits and includes many colonial-era homes dating back to 1714. It is also home to four schools: Park Ridge Elementary School, Freehold Township High School, Middlebury Intermediate School and Livingston Valley Regional Vocational Technical Institute. The name "Freehold" originated from the Dutch words "freeland" which means "farmstead". In 1664, General George Washington's army halted at Freehold for supplies after crossing the Delaware River. In 1803, Commodore John Dred Scott's squadron anchored at Fort Mifflin at Freehold for repairs before marching on Philadelphia. On July 4th of that year, a group of colonists from Burlington who had gathered there to celebrate Independence announced they were forming their own township called Freehold. On December 15th of that year (1803), a group of settlers from Rahway formed their own township too - Rahway Township was incorporated on February 4th of 1804). The first settler in what would become Freehold was Nicholas Bowne who arrived in 1714 with his family consisting of four children and three women; he built a farmstead on what is now part of Maplewood Avenue. The first church in what would become free hold was erected in 1736 by Rev James Caldwell and soon afterwards Reverend John Smith became pastor thereof; both men are buried at Mount Hope Cemetery near Rahwayhay Village today along with other early pastors including Jonathan Edwards (1724-1792). One early resident described it as follows: “At this time [1664], we inhabited an excellent country lying upon an ample armory plain situated upon high ground between two river arms” Bishop James Caldwell (1681-1748) labored assiduously among us during our sufferings under Charles II.; it has been computed he gave unto us more than one hundred dollars per annum towards support Many people remember Reverend James Caldwell because he donated land for Our Lady’s Parish Complex – eventually becoming known as Maplewood Avenue – which can still be seen today across from Town Hall on First Street near Route 20

The town of Freehold, now a part of Elizabeth Township in Union County, N.J., was founded by Dutch farmers in the early 17th century. The first European to settle in the area was Pieter van der Ouden, who built a sawmill on the Sauconia River in 1693. In 1814,Freehold became a township and later an independent county. In 1868, Freehold became part of New Jersey’s newly formed 10th legislative district and held its first election that year. From then until 1978, Freehold was represented by two members of the New Jersey Legislature. The town has since reverted back to its original form as an unincorporated community within Elizabeth Township. Today, Freehold is known for itssnappy white pickets on its buildings and for being one of only a few townships in New Jersey with a full-time Historical Preservation Department responsible for preserving local historical sites and artifacts from decay or destruction over time. In addition toAddress Unknown (the building that served as the municipal offices from 1868 until 1978), Freehold also contains several other noteworthy historical landmarks including:•The oldest public school in New Jersey - which opened in 1701•The first Masonic Lodge west of the Appalachian Mountains - erected on Phillipsburg Road in 1798•A hospital licensed by the state legislature - built on Easton Avenue between 1853 and 1860•A post office established at Freehold Heights in 1876—a hamlet now located within Elizabeth Township
The first European to visit the area now known as Freehold was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The Dutch established a trading post on the Jersey Shore in 1609, and during the 17th century, Freehold became an English Crown Colony. In 1764, the British acquired freehold rights to the land from the Dutch for £10 per acre. The town of Freehold was founded in 1765 by Loyalists who had fled to New Jersey after being persecuted by the British government. The town grew rapidly and soon became one of New Jersey's largest cities. In 1814, Freehold joined with Middlesex County to form Monmouth County.
