In the17th century, Freehold was a small village in Burlington County, New Jersey. The town's first settlers were Dutch. In 1764, the Treaty of Paris ended the American Revolution and gave Great Britain ownership of all but three of New Jersey. One part of Freehold was given to John Woolwich, a British soldier who had fought in the war. This area became known as Woolwich Township. Freehold grew quickly into a small town during the 19th century due to its location near Morristown and its access to transportation including an Erie Canal route that led to Philadelphia. The population peaked at around 20,000 in 1881; however, it declined rapidly after that point until reaching its low level in 1911 with just 9 residents. During World War II, Freehold played an important role in supplying munitions for the Allied forces; during this time there was also construction of factories such as Ford Motor Company’s plants on Main Street which created large numbers of jobs for locals. After World War II, many local businesses closed down and most residents left Freehold for other towns in the county or neighboring counties. However, some continue to live in Freehold today through their families or through ancestry connections.
The town of Freehold was chartered in 1765 by the Dutch East India Company. It became a part of New Jersey in 1777. The first post office in Freehold opened in 1778. In 1811, the town became the county seat of Monmouth County.
