One problem was that some European immigrants did not have proper Americanized namesakes such as John or Isaac; instead they chose traditional European surnames such as Holland or Beaumont (because these were among the few families who could afford to do so). As a result, several streets within Freehold were named after European aristocrats or Dutch farmers who had moved to North America: Park Avenue (after Prince Frederick Augustus Park), Mayfair Street (after Queen Victoria's husband), Belgravia Avenue (after Belgium), Arlington Drive (after General George Washington), and Grosvenor Place (after King George III). Many residents also adopted Anglo-American surnames such as Smith or Livingston because these were more common among their neighbors thanEuropean equivalents. During World War II many residents left their homes to take up arms against Germany but most returned home once hostilities ended in 1945. However, some patriotic citizens kept freeholders' stores open until late at night so that civilians could buy goods necessary for reconstruction purposes; this tradition continues today under the name "Freeholder's Village." After World War II many businesses closed down due to economic recession which hit New Jersey hard; however, businessman Seymour Sussman started The Seymour Sussman Co., Ltd., which continued operation into the 21st century despite difficult times throughout much of New Jersey’s history
