Freehold Township is a township in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 26,873. The name "Freehold" originated from the fact that it was not part of any township and its land was free to purchase or sell at will. The first settler in what became Freehold Township was Nicholas Ditmars who arrived on October 10, 1764 and claimed two lots on the east side of High Street which he named "Ditmars Township." On March 27, 1772, Andrew Hamilton purchased of Nicholas Ditmars three acres on the west side of High Street for $5.50 cash. The township's first official document was created on November 7, 1814 when Isaac Beall purchases from John Prentiss one acre in lieu of payment for his father's unused farmstead located south of present-day Bound Brook Avenue. ThisPurchase marked the beginning of what would become known as Freehold Township proper - this area extending to today's Maplewood neighborhood along Bound Brook Avenue). The first school opened in what is now called Maplewood (then known as North Brunswick) on September 3rd, 1825. In 1838 Freehold had 5 schools: 2 public and 3 private; each with their own gymnasium/library/cafeteria/field club house/ball fields etc.. A new school building was erected by the Board of Education in 1912 which still stands today - it served as both a high school and Middle School until 1984 when South Hunterdon Intermediate School took over those functions. In 1916 there were 9 churches with an attendance range from 350 to 1500 people per day! There were also 8 businesses with a combined payroll for 1922 totaling $1 million! In 1951 Freehold Vocational Institute became NJIT and then Hunterdon Institute before finally closing its doors in 1984 due to budget cuts caused by recessionary times across all sectors including education within NJIT itself - although some remnants can be seen throughout current day Hunterdon Borough!

The name "Freehold" derived from the Dutch word for "free." The first settlement in what is now Freehold was made on July 8, 1681 by Pieter Nowak and his family under the leadership of Govan's Expedition. A post office called Freehold was established in 1711, and remained in operation until 1837. The township of Freehold was organized on March 14, 1838. It became a borough on November 3 of that year. On December 15, 1860, it became a city with a population of 508 inhabitants. On May 11th of this year it was re-made a borough again with an increased population to 1,092 people within its borders). The Borough Council has 12 members (3 each from wards 2-6 and 7-13) which makes it one of NJ's smallest cities by size but also one of its most powerful due to its number of committee assignments and numerous services offered to residents such as public transportation and parks/recreation areas.
