Franklin Lakes is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Wilmington-Atlantic City metropolitan area. The Franklin Lakes ZIP Code is 08608. The name "Franklin Lakes" comes from General James Wilkinson's home on Long Island in 1758 and refers to his son John Wilkinson who had married a daughter of Colonel Nicholas Roosevelt of Franklin Township, Morris County (now Camden). In 1811 Franklin Lakes was incorporated as a township by order of Governor George Washington and named for General James Wilkinson. The first settler arrived in 1800 and the town was established in 1802 by Order of President George Washington as part of the Morristowndivision which included Philadelphia and all along the Delaware River shoreline. After Pennsylvania became an independent state on December 16, 1871, Franklin Lakes became part of New Jersey with its own government. On March 14, 1893, it amalgamated with neighboring townships Unionville (now West Milford), Easton Township (now Vineland), East Brunswick Township (now Allentown), South Brunswick Township (now Glassboro) and Hillarys Ferry to form what is now known as Morris County Borough including Franklin Lakes Village Center located within Borough limits only. In 1971 when Morris County formed from parts of Middlesex County following the merger dispute between those counties over issues such as firefighting services and public transportation funding, Franklin Lakes village center became borough property despite objections from residents who wanted it retained within their municipalities. As late as July 2006 some residents were still using Borough email addresses for municipal purposes even though borough officials had switched to using zip code 8608 for all official purposes effective August 1st that year after complaints from residents about problems associated with having emails sent to both zip codes

The name change came about because during that year a group of farmers living around Lakes voted to change their name to account for increasing references to Lake Ontario (now known as Niagara Falls) in local newspapers. In 1900, residents decided to remove all reference to Canada from their community's public documents and names and reverted back to their original English names: "Franklin", "Lakes", and "New Jersey". As a result of this decision, most Canadian immigrants who moved into Franklin Lakes during that time either never encountered or forgot about those origins. Today, Franklin Lakes remains a small town with close-knit relationships between its residents and businesses; it has been called one of America's "happy villages". The town has hosted many events throughout its history including numerous carnivals and fairs which have drawn people from all over New Jersey and Canada.
Franklin Lakes was developed in the early 1800s as a result of the efforts of Captain Benjamin Franklin. He purchased land near what is now Franklin Lakes and built a trading post called "The forks". The post became a center for trade between the United States and Great Britain. In 1812, Captain John Stevens founded another trading post in Franklin Lakes named Fort Stevens. This site served as a communications hub linking the two posts. In 1816, General James Wilkinson founded an agricultural colony at nearby Monmouth Junction, which became known as New Jersey. The colonists needed food to support their population and developed agriculture as their primary industry. In 1824, Commodore John Cushing chartered the Delaware River Company to build a canal from Newark Liberty to Camden. The company built the canal and named it after George Washington because he had been instrumental in helping secure its passage through Philadelphia during the Revolutionary War. The canal allowed goods and passengers to move faster and easier than ever before from Pennsylvania to New Jersey without traveling through Delaware Bay or Philadelphia
