Franklin Lakes is a small town in New Jersey, United States. It is located in the Mercer County seat of West Egg on the eastern edge of Monmouth County. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. The community's name comes from Franklin Roosevelt who lived there and was president during World War II. The area that would become Franklin Lakes was firstsettled by Dutch settlers in 1664. They named it "Hertogenbosch" after their leader, Prince Maurice of Orange. In 1814, a group of Englishmen led by Colonel John Stevens arrived in America and founded West Egg on Long Island Sound to exploit the resources nearby. They named their settlement after Franklin D. Roosevelt, then American President who had just been elected as part of the fourth term of his predecessor James Ketchum's administration. The townspeople soon started to build a permanent community around what is now its core square mile (2 km²). As America became more industrialized, demand for workers increased and businesses began to move into what are now Franklin Lakes from other parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. In 1924, ammonia plants were built near the town by Union Carbide Corporation which made it an important market for local farmers; also factories like PCC Pipe & Steel Company and Cooksauto Service used nearby land for production until they moved out in the early 1970s when farming became less significant among local residents overall but still active within village boundaries through family-owned farmssteading until recently with tractors serviceable year round outside farm gates) . Franklin Lakes was a hamlet in Middlesex County, New Jersey, until 1915. It was located on the border of Franklin Township and Lebanon Township. It is now part of the city of East Brunswick. The first European to visit what is now Franklin Lakes was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Pemaquidiano after his anchorage there. In 1764, Nicholas-Jacques Conte built a mill on the river at present-day East Brunswick and named it for his friend and mentor, Benjamin Franklin. The mill continued operation until 1825; it seems that no one really knew how to operate a water powermill properly then! After the death of Benjamin Franklin in 1790, most of his followers went off to found new communities like Philadelphia or Boston but he retained some vestiges of influence in this small township by appointing six trustees to manage the town's affairs - all were men from Plainfield Village or nearby townships who had known him well over many years. Notably John Woolridge (1758-1837) became one of these trustees as did Elijah Howe (1775-1828). In 1815, when township administrator George Prentice resigned because he could not seem to keep up with population growth, Franklin Lakes became an unincorporated community under the jurisdiction of Lebanon Township when that township was created from parts of Middlesex and Burlington Counties together in 1915. Numerous signers including John D'Alonge (1686-1768), Samuel Adams (1723-1795), James Lovell (baptized 22 December 1684 at West Windsor), Robert Morris (Robert Morris II 8 January 1746 – 10 October 1826), Nathan Hale (20 November 1752 – 30 September 1800) signed the Declaration of Independence on 5 June 1776 at Trenton Plantation near modern day Uniondale, New York City while living in Lancaster County NY; they were 21 years old at the time their signatures were taken! pondering why we do not get more stars for our great country...lol
