Herrington, started selling targets from a small storefront on Elmwood Avenue. The business was soon moved to its current location on Main Street in 1912 and continued to operate until it closed in 1978. The target holders industry has changed over the years, but the basic design remains the same: a long wood or metal rod with a hole drilled in one end (the “head”) and an adjustable height platform affixed to the other end (the “tail”). Franklin Lakes was a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The community was founded by General John Sullivan in 1799 as the first permanent settler in what is now Hunterdon County. The village was incorporated as a borough on December 10, 1872, from portions of Franklin Township. It became a city on February 14, 1958. The population of Franklin Lakes was 13,898 at the 2010 census. The village and borough were named for George Washington Franklin (1755-1824), one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and one of the most influential men in early Hunterdon County. He served as justice of peace for Burlington Township from 1794 to 1800 and as Selectman from 1800 to 1802; he also served as sheriff for Mercer County from 1799 to 1800 and again from 1802 to 1809. In addition to his political activities, Franklin also built prolifically throughout his life an estate called "Franklin Lakes", which lies today within the boundaries of Franklin Lakes City Hall. In 1799, General John Sullivan moved his family from what is now Northampton Township into what are now downtown Franklins Lakes after purchasing land therefrom near where Sullivan's estate layuate still stands today. On October 4 that year, Samuel Smith set out a large tree at what is now corner Main Street and Court Avenue while acting Constable for Huntingdon Parish. That tree would become known locally as "The Giant" because it stood so tall during its first few years (it had been measured only 20 inches high when it was planted). Upon reaching maturity it had grown to nearly 60 feet tall! From this event forward numerous other local residents came together with President James Kapperer (a delegate to both the First Continental Congress and Second Continental Congress) on October 4th each year to celebrate Halloween by cutting down or setting up their own giant trees throughout downtown Franklins Lakes - something that continued until well into 2003! All told between these various events attendance at localhauntedtrees grew steadily over time! There have even been some recent efforts made by volunteers within Franklins Lakes City Hall itself...to recreate or even improve upon some of those older landmarks which weathered many years without proper attention - something that should be applauded not just because such initiatives often results in more fun but because they help remind us all just how much has changed since our ancestors first settled here!
In 1764, the area that is now Franklin Lakes was part of Princeton Township. In 1814, it became part of Trenton Township. In 1834, it became a part of New Jersey.
