Franklin Lakes is a small town in Sussex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,513 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The township was formed on February 3, 1814 from parts of Rahway and South Orange Township. The first settler in Franklin Lakes was John Payne. In 1834, the township became part of Middlesex County and its borders changed to the north by Uniontown and east by Freehold Township; to the south by Toms River Township; and to the west by Rahway Township (from which it gained its name). In 1870, a post office called "Franklin Lakes" was established in Franklin Lakes Village; it continued operation until 1840. In 1886, a new post office called "Lakeside" was established in Franklin Lakes Village. It continued operation until 1984. A large cotton gin built in 1892 by Jethro Gibbs & Sons located near what is now Route 9 resulted in an increase in local production that helped make Franklin Lakes one of the most prosperous townships within New Jersey during this time period. The residents also constructed several churches including First Presbyterian Church which still stands today and remains one of the most popular tourist attractions within town limits as well as two other churches - Stations Chapel and Christmastime Lutheran Church - both of which are open to visitors all year round for services provided daily during Christmas season as well as special events such as processions or music concerts throughout summertime when there are no services being offered at either church due to higher numbers of visitors coming than available seats for worshipers at any given time outside those peak times). One Of The original buildings from this gin still stands today next door to Lake Shore Drive Business Park along with some other early 19th century businesses such as a bakery (now closed) operated by Mrs Ladd & Son who made cinnamon toast balls out front), clothing store (closed 1995), hardware store (closed 1980), gas station/restaurant (closed 1994) along with several other older industrial buildings before it too closed down around 2000 according to their website www.franklinslakevillagehallof Fame granted because they have been able to maintain nearly all rights including sign lease agreement, gardens/patio space inside building since 1975! Franklin Lakes, New Jersey is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. Franklin Lakes is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Franklin Lakes were Dutch traders in 1608 and 1609. The name "Franklin" originated with John Franklin (1619-1690), an American explorer and surveyor who explored the east coast of North America from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland inations during the early 17th century. In 1765, his brother Benjamin was granted a tract of land on the north side of Lake Monmouth by King George III for his services as a lieutenant colonel in British military forces during the American Revolution. The town was founded onsite by General George Washington on July 24, 1795 as part of the Northern Liberties District which became known as Newark after Philadelphia had become independent from Great Britain two years earlier. In 1801, around 100 acres (40 hectares) of lands surrounding what is now Franklin Lakes were purchased from General David Livingstone by John Drexel for $1 million dollars (£700,000). Drexel named it after himself and began developing it into one of New Jersey's largest cotton plantations – one that would remain active until 1959 when it merged with another large plantation to form DuPonts River Mills Corporation. At its peak production capacity in 1915 – before tap water became available – River Mills produced more than half a million pounds (2 metric tons) of cotton per day. When World War I started and demand for cotton plummeted due to technological advances such as automobiles and radios which could be made without using raw cotton materials, River Mills closed down its mills while many others throughout New England also did so; however,DuPont continued operations until 1979 when it merged with other chemical companies to form Dow Chemical Corporation During local elections held on November 3rd 1889 ballot Question 1 asking whether any public funds should be used for improvements or maintenance within village limits not exceeding $5 per inhabitant was approved by vote margin of 163 votes to 25; Question 2 asking if any new buildings or properties should be erected within village limits since there are already too many existing structures polluting atmosphere resulted in no action being taken either way with just 10 votes cast total On December 6th 1892 referendum results declared that all citizens over 19 years old are allowed to vote regardless if they reside inside or outside municipality limits especially because “the present system does not recognize this right” Town Meeting voted unanimously on January 14th 1893 “to erect a school house at Franklinsville township” despite objections raised against doing so by some residents who claimed that their property would then become tax exempt In 1895 Samuel Morse donated land adjoining modern-day Route 9 southbound between current Route 7 and Springvale Road in order for schools within town boundaries proximate thereto including Franklin Township Elementary School built thereon . This donation paved way for today's high school located adjacent thereto . The original schoolhouse burned down in 1916 but was replaced with present day structure about 1951 . After World War II both public schools across town merged under one roof becoming Community High School while also adding an annexe providing separate instruction for students living outside township boundaries
The Franklin Lakes were a watercourse in the township of Franklin, New Jersey. The stream rose from the Delaware River and flowed through the townships of Franklin, Livingston, Morris and Perth Amboy before emptying into the Susquehanna River. The first known reference to the area that now includes Franklin Lakes was in 1668 when Nicholas Verrazzano noted "the vast tract of country lying between Swedes on one side and Indians on the other". In 1784, John Hackett built a mill on the stream. The stream was first dammed in 1856 by George Stephenson to form Lake Winnipesaukee. It was then diverted south-southeast by means of a tunnel under Interstate 95 to form Lake Hiawatha as part of New York State Route 9W.
