Franklin Lakes is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,390 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the north shore of Lake Monmouth and is part of the Newark-Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Franklin Lakes were Dutchmen in 1624 and 1625. French traders visited in 1688 and 1701. The first English settlement was created when two men named John Stevens arrived in 1702 as part of an expedition led by Colonel George Washington. They built a small log cabin on what is now known as Stevens Road. In 1715, General James Clinton occupied the area and named it for himself, adding "Lakes" to his name to distinguish it from other settlements along the Delaware River then under British control. during this time period there were several mills in Franklin Lakes including Edward Crouse's (1712-1786) manufactured goods store and blacksmith shop which still stands today within the limits of the town limits today while others such as Nicholas Gass (1685-1755), Jonas Clarke (1689-1750), Robert Barclay (c1704-after 1751), Jeremiah Morrow (c1710? - after 1772), Samuel Borden (18th century) all built homes around what is today called "The Old Post Office". In 1814, Abraham Lincoln served as Mayor of Newark and later became Governor of New Jersey from 1828 until his death in 1846; he was also one of America's few local officials to serve multiple terms without interruption. On July 4th, 1908, Franklin Lakes became a village with a population of 1,100 people when portions of Township 3 southward following Route 33 eastward were annexed into Village boundaries creating what are now Boroughs 2nd Ward - Franklin Lakes Borough; 3rd Ward - Maple Shade Borough; 4th Ward - South Brunswick Borough; 5th Ward - North Brunswick Borough A new post office was opened at Franklincksville on February 24th 1850 by Jno Haggerty who had moved there from Montclair shortly before that date with letters sent through horse drawn wagons using a system similar to that used today The ratification process for independence from Great Britain began on September 14th 1800 with General John Burgoyne commanding British forces occupying Philadelphia On October 25th 1800 Major General William Howe arrived at Princeton with his army intending to move against Philadelphia but instead suffered a humiliating defeat at Saratoga resulting in Howe being forced back across New York Bay where he took up residence at Saratoga Manor prior to marching back home via Albany On November 26 th 1800 Captain John Smith sailed upriver from Trenton bound for Kingston but due to bad weather encountered trouble near Bound Brook Turnpike where he abandoned shipwrecked his entire crew becoming an international figurehead for piracy throughout much of North America On December 12 th 1800 Commodore Stephen Decatur arriving off Long Island found Smith stranded ashore near Elizabethtown Landing claims authorship for 'Smith's Harbor' which has been variously claimed by both Americans and Canadians since that time

Franklin Lakes is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hackensack–Middlesex Borough. The name of Franklin Lakes comes from Benjamin Franklin, who lived there for a time and wrote about it in his book "The Pennsylvania Gazette". When European settlers arrived in what is now Bergen County in the early 17th century, they were largely farmers with only a few small acreage holdings. One such settler was John Franks (1675-1745), who came to Franklin Lakes in 1686. In 1714, he married Mary White (died 1746). They raised two children: John Franks II (1715-1792) and Susannah Franks (1718-1790). In 1827, three brothers founded the village of Hackensack on the southern edge of what is today Franklin Lakes. That same year also saw the opening of what would become one of America's first post offices - at that time known as "Hackensack Township." A year later, Franklins moved to their current location within present-day Franklin Lakes Township and began operation as a grocery store and general Store.
The area now known as Franklin Lakes was originally part of the township of Highland Park. The name came from General James Wolfe's victory over the French at Quebec in 1759. In 1812, the township was divided into two parts, Franklin Township and Ramsey Township. The old village of Highland Park (now a ghost town) was located in Franklin Township. In 1827, the township adopted a new constitution and became an offshoot of Middlesex County. On November 3, 1828, the first general election in this county was held and Samuel Morse was elected as one of its members. He served until his death in 1849. In 1850, the population of Franklin Township Reached about 3000 people; however, by 1860 it had declined to about 1000 people due to increased immigration from New York and other states during this decade. This trend continued until 1870 when there were still only a few hundred residents living in Franklin Township; however, by 1880 it had grown to more than 2000 people due to waves of new immigrants coming from Germany and Italy. In 1876, Ramsey Township merged with Franklin Township to form what is now Jersey City Heights on what is now Borough Hall Road near Journal Square between Chambers Street and Washington Boulevard in Downtown Jersey City
