Franklin Lakes was a small village located in Franklin County, New Jersey, United States. It was part of the Bergen Township government until 1871. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. The first colonists arrived in what is now Franklin Lakes in 1764 from Newark, New Jersey. They built a cabin on an island in the forks of the Raritan River and named it "Lenox." In 1769, they took up land that became Franklin Township and built a new cabin on High Street (now Route 9). The original Lenox Cabin still stands today as a historic landmark. In 1821, following the American Revolution, New Jersey ceded its western half to Ohio as part of the Treaty of Paris. As part of this treaty, Pennsylvania assumed control over the villages of Franklin Lakes and White Marsh in Bergen Township. Pennsylvania began to build roads into these villages and by 1830 had completed all but one road into Franklin Lakes; this road became known as White Marsh Road. In 1871, parts of Bergen Township were merged with Franklin County to form new counties; however, Franklin Lakes retained its own government until 1925 when it became part of Branchburg Borough. Branchburg Borough lost its borough status in 1974 and reverted back to township status; however, it remains within Franklins Lake Community School District 10 through special arrangement with neighboring Woodland Hills School District 11 which merged into Branchburg Borough on April 1st 1998).
Franklin Lakes was founded in 1795 by James Franklin as a trading post on the Delaware River. The community grew rapidly and soon included a school, store, and brewery. In 1812, the town was renamed to Franklin after President George Washington. In 1868, the township was divided into two separate municipalities – Franklin Lakes and Ramsey Township. The town of Franklin Lakes merged with Ramsey Township in 1978.
