The area of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey that includes the communities of Franklin Lakes, Seward Park and Ridgewood was first settled in 1794 by European immigrants from Germany. Franklin Lakes is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Trenton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Franklin Lakes were Dutch and English people who arrived there in 1664. In 1821, Colonel John Stevens founded Stevens' Ferry on the Passaic River and named it after himself. In 1834, General James Kempton moved his troops from Trenton to Franklin Lakes after learning that Native Americans had been inhabiting the area for some time. He built a military fort here and named it Fort Kempton Heights. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century thanks to its location at the intersection of two major roadways: Route 9 (which connectedPhiladelphia with Trenton) and Route 10 (which linked Camden with New York City). By 1870, Franklins had attained a full-time status as a village and was home to over 1,000 residents. However, due to industrialization and railroad development throughout America during this time period, Franklin Lakes declined in popularity by the end of the 19th century. It regained popularity starting in the early 20th century through various businesses such as agriculture, manufacturing, fishing and tourism initiatives which spread throughout Middlesex County during this time period In 1951, when Middlesex County was merged into New Jersey along with other counties within New York State pursuant to an act of Congress known as The Statute of Union,[2] Franklin Lakes became part of Uniontown Township within Middlesex County[3]. At that point it also lost its municipal government status but continued to be monitored by township officials until 1990 when it entirely passed away from existence save for occasional visits by township trustees under special law.[4][5] Today much of what once made Franklin Lakes so attractive has been replaced by suburban developments: A large shopping mall located near Interstate 95; a school system operated by Teaneck Schools District; churches including one affiliated with The Episcopal Church; numerous factories which have closed or been converted into apartments or condos; several small villages such as North Homestead Village which still retains many historical buildings dating back to before World War II; an amusement park calledSix Flags Great Adventure which opened in 1962 adjacent to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom nearby; as well as professional sports teams like Rutgers University's Scarlet Knights football team[6][7] However some aspects remain unchanged such as its rich history including ample evidence of Dutch settlement dating back more than three centuries located just outside town limits on what used originally been called "the flatlands" now home to extensive fields surrounding both townships - one particular example being Deeper Pond Creek where significant remains can still be foundriethed among thickets dating back over 400 years Franklin Lakes is bordered eastward by Maple Shade Township while westward it borders Unity Township

As of the 2010 United States Census, the population of Franklin Lakes had grown to 602 people, making it one of the most populous villages in Monmouth County. The economic center for Franklin Lakes is its shopping center which includes a variety of retailers including clothing stores and accessory stores as well as foodservice options such as restaurants and cafes. Additionally, there are several professional offices that are located within walking distance of the shopping center including law enforcement, accounting and marketing firms as well as medical services businesses.
