In 1953, United States Patent 377921 was issuedto John Wetherbee for a design called "Gun Swivel." This device consisted of an elongated tube-like member that was inserted into one end of a rifle's stock and connected by two flexible arms located near its base. The arms could be rotated about an axis perpendicular to the rifle's bore in order To ADS (ejecting all rounds from the chamber) or TDC (tucking the barrel under the grip). Although initially designed for handguns only, Gun Swivel quickly became popular among military snipers and artillerymen throughout World War II because it allowed them unrestricted access to fire rockets and cannons while still wearing gloves.
