After the war ended, many farms were abandoned and some buildings remain standing today including one which has been used as a school house since 1923. One of Franklin Lakes' most famous residents is boxing champion Rocky Marciano who grew up nearby in Elizabethtown Township before moving to Atlantic City to become an entrepreneur and entertainer

Despite this limitation, the township quickly became an important crossroads for trade and commerce within what would become Middlesex County; it was also home to some of the region’s earliest mills and factories. During World War II much activity took place at nearby Middletown Naval Shipyard which resulted in increased development around the lakefront area; however despite this growth there were no definitive efforts made to preserve any aspects of local history or landscape until after 2001 when Mayor John Sauter spearheaded plans for renovation/restoration work at several properties including Buttermilk Hill (now known as Morningside Heights), which had been abandoned for years following neglect by previous owners In 1971, when Rahway Township merged with Franklin Lakes Township to form Franklin Lakes Borough, many residents expected little from their new municipal government because they felt that they were receiving less than their fair share from both municipalities’ budgets combined However soon after Mayor John Sauter came into office he began working towards revitalization projects at several properties including Buttermilk Hill (now known as Morningside Heights), which had been abandoned for years following neglect by previous owners This effort culminated in 2002 when Mayor Sauter announced plans for renovation/restoration work at several properties including Buttermilk Hill (now known as Morningside Heights), which had been abandoned for years following neglect by previous owners . During World War II, Franklin Lakes played a significant role in the defense of New Jersey, providing munitions production plants and housing for manufacturing workers.
