The first settler in Franklin Lakes was John Sikes who arrived in 1798. He built a cabin on the west side of the village. The first store was opened in 1819 by Nicholas Noyes and his son-in-law, Elijah Whitehead. In 1824, Moses Demarest opened a general store and post office near where the Erie Canal crossed over from Pennsylvania to New Jersey. Franklin Lakes developed around two churches: First Methodist Church (1825), which became+(1973) Presbyterian; and Second Baptist Church (1827). A school started up in 1829 as an academy for boys called "Dunsmore School." It soon became known as "Franklin Lakes Academy." In 1836, Isaac McCoy set up a tannery onagaon lakeFront property northeast of town center that became one of the most successful tanneries anywhere at that time. Franklin Lakes is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,852 at the 2010 census. The town site was settled by English colonists in 1720 and named for Benjamin Franklin, an American politician and diplomat who served as the first Vice President of the United States from 1793 to 1801. The name Franklin Lakes is also used for part of Paterson Township in Passaic County, New Jersey. The township was formed from parts of Rahway Township on November 16, 1837. It was incorporated as a borough on December 1, 1867. On May 25, 1933 it became a part of Paterson Township when that municipality merged with Rahway Township. The Franklin Lakes area has been occupied by humans since before 10 thousand years ago according to archaeological evidence found at nearby Killingly Farmstead and Lopatcong Lake National Wildlife Refuge which are located within the borough limits of Franklin Lakes. One local legend tells of Native Americans who built longhouses at Killingly Pond during wintertime to keep warm and hunt animals such as deer or turkey; however there is no evidence that such activity took place in this vicinity prior to European settlement. European explorers decided to name what is now Franklin Lakes after Samuel Morse because he had developed early kilowatt-powered technology and built some early mills in the region around 1800 including one near present day Rahway (renamed Lindenwood Park after him).
