The town was founded on the banks of the Passaic River by English colonists in 1701. It derives its name from Benjamin Franklin, an American statesman who became known for his work as a printer and political theorist. In 1812, during the War of 1812, General James K. Polk's army passed through Franklin Lakes on their way to battle Canada near Yorktown Heights in Virginia; they were met by a large crowd of civilians who had gathered to see them pass. After the war, some of Polk's units encampment stopped at the nearby Lake George Battlefield where they burned cannons while others cooked dinner before continuing their journey home. In 1829, lawyer Augustus Biddle bought 5 acres (20 hectares) along what is now Route 9 South from John Livingston for $2 per acre (0.8 km²). He named it "Franklin Lakes" after himself and built a log cabin there which he used as his law office until 1860 when he sold it to Daniel Webster for $10 per acre (3 km²). In 1830-31, Abraham Lincoln traveled through Franklin Lakes on his campaign trip from Canandaigua to Rochester and then Syracuse; he stayed at Mr. Webster's cabin and dined with him and several other prominent citizens before traveling east again that night via Buffalo Niagara Falls into Ohio Territory. From Buffalo Niagara Falls he took another road northward across Ontario Provincial territory towards Cleveland; but about 4 miles (6 km) beyond this point he took Canadian National Road #1 instead which led him right into Erie County where he spent Sunday night before reaching Springfield Township on Monday morning – thus completing his three-day visit to all five New England states! On election day in November 3rd 1830 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States without being cast ballots in any state! In 1838-39 Congressman Nicholas Cooke erected a frame house at 208 Main Street which served as one of two public buildings within walking distance of each other in Franklin Lakes – the other being Driggs School House located 2 blocks away on Maple Avenue – until its demolition circa 1920s when it was replaced by an apartment building fronting Maple Avenue between Northumberland Avenue and Scotch Plains Boulevard which also housed local department stores until 1984 when it caught fire and damage resulting in loss of life resulted; thereafter all retail operations have been conducted from an adjacent parking lot connected thereto providing further convenience for shoppers however store hours remain unchanged since 1984 despite repeated requests to change them due primarily to safety concerns especially around construction site areas adjacent thereto sometimes accommodating up to 25 vehicles simultaneously blocking access aisleways leading inside etc.; Although Nosee Plaza has been proposed as potential new business center should development proceed no such proposal has yet been made official despite repeated encouragement from Mayor Frank Giannini however recent reports suggest that such redevelopment may be imminent given current trends involving increased traffic congestion around nearby shopping malls etc.). Franklin Lakes was a small community in Middlesex County, New Jersey, located on the eastern edge of the township of Franklin. The community was established in 1892 by George H. Its population declined during the latter part of the 19th century, but rapidly increased during World War I because of its proximity to military bases in nearby Newark and Trenton. The town was originally named after General George Washington Franks (1778–1850), an officer in the United States Army who served with distinction at various battles including Saratoga and Yorktown. After Franks' death in 1892, his brother Amos took over management of the community and continued to use the name until 1925 when he changed it to Franklin Lakes Township (incorporating Franklin Lakes). The township became an independent municipality within Middlesex County on January 1, 2002; Franklin Lakes Borough followed suit two years later on October 1, 2004. Franklin Lakes is located at (39.660968,-74.878527). According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all land except for 0.063 square miles (0.23 km²) water which is included within Franklin Lakes Borough.. The Township of Franklin Lakes was organized on March 1, 1825. The township was named for General James Robertson Franklin who fought in the American Revolution. The Township grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of 203 people. On July 1, 1831, the Township was incorporated as a borough. In 1835 the Borough became a city and on January 1, 1898 the City of Franklin Lakes merged with neighboring Borough of Parsippany to form the City of Parsippany-Franklin Lakes.
