The area was originally part of the Lenape Indian Nation. It was acquired by the British in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. In 1815, it became part of New Jersey. Franklin Lakes was named after George Washington, who was also born there. The population grew rapidly following World War II and increased when the military constructed housing developments around it in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, Franklin Lakes is home to a large number of people who are engaged in various businesses and activities including fishing, boating, farming, forestry, manufacturing, etc.

In 1814, they bought land from the Lenape and laid out a town on what is now Park Avenue West. They called it "Het Volkstal" or "The People's Village." The town charter was granted on July 24, 1815. In 1830, when Morris County was created, Franklin Lakes became part of it. It remained an agricultural village until the 1940s when manufacturing began to increase in the area due to its proximity to MetLife Stadium and other large industrial sites. By 1970,virtually all of Franklin Lakes' manufacturing had been eliminated by competition from newcomers like General Motors and Ford Motor Company. However, during the early 21st century there has been growth back into manufacturing through initiatives such as startup businesses that focus on advanced technology or health care products; this recovery has come despite recent economic volatility caused by global trade War conditions with China and other countries. As of 2010-11 there are over 100 fulltime jobs located within commuting distance of Franklin Lakes Borough Hall which provides services such as parks & recreation; social services; daycare; libraries; job training programs; engineering/technology; construction management/ carpentry/dentistry etc., making it one of largest employers in town employing over 350 people directly or indirectly including many skilled professionals that provide essential services to their communities while also sustaining local economies..

Franklin Lakes is a township in Warren County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Franklin Lakes were Dutch and Swedes who arrived in 1664. The original name for the township was "Lakensburgh." In 1847, it became part of Warren County when it was formed from portions of Middlesex and Essex Counties. In 1868, Franklin Lakes lost its status as a borough and became an unincorporated community within the township. In 1951, it became a full-fledged town when it combined with neighboring Unadilla Township to form the new city of Newark–Trenton. Newark–Trenton annexed two other townships – Spring Lake and East Rutherford – in 1978. From 1923 until its merger with Trenton in 1978, Franklin Lakes functioned as an independent municipality under the name "Franklin Lakes Township". The current name honors Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). In 1850, there were only three families living in Franklin Lakes; by 1880 there were over 100 residents living here including many wealthy farmers and manufacturers who had developed farming land around what is now Route 9A between Elizabethtown Road and Routes 9W and 10W near where Pascack Brook flows into Raritan Bayou
The first European to explore what is now Franklin Lakes was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland, and it was not until 1664 that the English took control of the region. At this time, the area became known as Upper New Jersey because it extended upriver from Newark Bay. In 1776, during the American Revolution, Upper New Jersey came under British control and remained so for almost two centuries. In 1814, after the Treaty of Paris ended the war, Upper New Jersey became part of the United States of America and reverted back to Dutch control. During World War II, Lower New Jersey was hit particularly hard by Nazi Germany's bombing campaign. As a result, many buildings in Lower Manhattan were destroyed or damaged; some still stand today including City Hall and Fort George Wright. On July 29th 1948, when United States President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 9981 which declared martial law inNew York City following riots that had taken place throughout Brooklyn over racial quotas proposed by Mayor James Byrnes (D), Lower Manhattan finally regained its pre-war appearance with new high rises added to make up for lost land values.
