Franklin Lakes is a census-designated place in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Franklin Lakes was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1674. The name may be derived from "Franklin", which is spelled "Farrell" in early English documents and which refers to a man who migrated from England in the early 17th century. In 1824, the community became known as Franklin Township when it was split off from Middlesex County. In 1828, land grants were made to ten families named Jarvis and Livingston for location of a town on high ground between the Clinton River and Monmouth Junction saltworks. By 1834, five families had contributed 2 square miles (5 km²) to form what would become Franklin Lakes; these Grants were confirmed by Governor John Stevens on July 2,1835. On November 3rd, 1868, during the American Civil War effort against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee there was an engagement at Franklin Lake between Union troops commanded by Colonel Wesley Kimball and Confederate cavalry under Captain James Longstreet; this battle led to significant losses for both sides with over 100 casualties reported including 10 Federal soldiers killed and 50 wounded with some estimates as high as 150 dead or missing; this engagement also helped define modern day Franklin Lakes as an important strategic crossroads linking northern New Jersey with southern Virginia and Maryland militarily speaking due to its location just across Monmouth Junction from Catonsville Court House where major battles fought during the war took place such as First Manassas (1862), Antietam (1962), Battle of Market Garden (1916), Battle of Petersburg (1865)), etc.; this event also helped contribute significantly to development within present day Franklin Lakes over time becoming one of largest commercial areas within Middlesex County today with many businesses existing since its inception dating back more than 120 years ago! The borough seat remained at Rahway until 1954 when it became part of Passaic Township after Rahway's incorporation into Middlesex County. In 1972 it reverted back to Rahway Borough following changes made by then-Mayor Raymond Flynn who felt that borough functions should be headed up by a single entity due primarily towards better management of services such as zoning approvals which had been outsourced previously at various levels through different organizations including the previous Borough Manager Ray Flynn himself having served several terms before he left office effective January 1st 1971 having failed in his attempts to consolidate all services beneath one roof resulting in multiple agencies operating independently throughout much of Essex County resulting ultimately in increased expenses while not actually improving anything! As mentioned earlier many businesses have been around for decades or longer specifically within present day Franklinslake including: civic organizations like Rotary Club locally founded in 1916 along side First Congregational Church - founded 1865 - Parkside Golf Course built 1912 - Masonic Temple built 1926 - Presbyterian Church 1940s/50s - American Legion Post 1945s/50s A number of industries have grown up around central business district located nearRahway Mall including: retail: Lowe's Companies Incorporated 1915 opened their first store here 1983; JCPenney Company 1946 opened their second store here 1984; Macy's Corporation 1949 opened their third store here 1990; Sears & Roebuck 1951 open their fourth store here 1991 Store closings include Burlington Coat Factory 1981; Zara Corporation 2005

In 1927, the township of Franklin Lakes merged with rural Ridgewood Township to form Franklin Township. The population of Franklin Township reached 10,000 in 1950 and since then it has grown rapidly. In 2008, the township annexed the neighboring village of Neptune City which had a total population of 2,500 residents at that time. According to the 2016 American Community Survey, the median household income for residents in Franklin Township is $95,898; however this number may change as annexation or other changes take place. The economy of Franklin Lakes is based largely on manufacturing and service businesses such as grocery stores and vehicle dealerships. There are also a few small farms that produce fruits and vegetables or raise livestock; however these activities are not as predominant as they once were. Manufacturing jobs have been lost throughout much of recent history due to competition from imports but recent growth has occurred within the manufacturing sector thanks to new investments by local companies such as PNC Bank and Allstate Insurance Company Limited Partnership (AIGLP). One important aspect of industrial development in New Jersey during this time period was transportation: railroads played an important role both supplying goods needed by manufacturers and transporting workers to their factories
Franklin Lakes was named for General George Washington and his wife, Martha. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenape people, who called it "Wiski-waska." The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Dutch traders and explorers in the mid-1600s. In 1764, English colonists arrived and soon began developing the area. In 1802, a post office was established at Franklin Lakes after county commissioners decided that the name should be given to a geographic feature in the county. Development of Franklin Lakes continued until the early 1900s when most of its land was taken over by developers for development into housing estates. Today, Franklin Lakes is home to a number of parks as well as several businesses and organizations.
