The only full-time college or university presence in Franklin Lakes is Monmouth University which has one campus located within the township limits and another campus located outside its boundaries but adjacent to both Bloomfield and Caldwell Townships.

Franklin Lakes, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 10,353 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City metropolitan area. The Franklin Lakes area was first settle by Dutch and English colonists in the 17th century. The first European to set foot on what is now Franklin Lakes was Pieter de Laet in 1676. In 1814, General James Kintyre purchased 8,000 acres of land around present day Franklin Lakes from Nicholas Gerardus Van der Sloot for $1 million dollars. At that time, it was one of the most remote areas in all of America and only accessible by boat or by walking or horseback riding for miles and miles. In 1854–55, American entrepreneur George Stephenson built a railroad line from Trenton to Camden via what is now Franklin Lakes. As the new town developed around the railroad station and mill village (now known as Daylesford), many residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Franklin Lakes". The townsite remained unincorporated until 1959 when it became part of Mercer County under local government rules passed duringeferring township status to villages with more than 5,000 people would no longer be able to apply for state funding for special services like education which were then provided exclusively by county governments. The entire community of Franklin Lakes was destroyed by fire on December 15th 1906 while Christmas shoppers were inside their homes - this event is commonly referred to as "the Great Fire" in Franklin Lakes history because so much property loss occurred and because it remains one of the most devastating natural disasters in township history. Despite this significant setback, over 60 years later development has continue apace with recent construction including two high schools (Bellevue High School and West Deptford Middle School) as well as new businesses such as an ice cream parlor and a hair salon/spa complex called Nuance Health & Wellness Center which opened its doors on February 1st 2019 just days after President Donald Trump visited Franklins Lakes during his State visit!

In 1814, the first permanent settlers in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey arrived. They were led by General John Sullivan and his troops as they traveled through the area in search of land to build a new home. The group was joined by other pioneers over the next few years, and eventually founded what is now known as Township of Franklin Lakes. In 1836, the township was formally organized and named after George Washington Franklin.
