In 1836, Fort Lee was the site of the first battle between United States and British forces in what became known as the Battle of Yorktown. In 1863, Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived at Fort Lee to take command of operations in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War. The fort served as a training ground for Union soldiers and was also used as a base for Confederate raids into New Jersey. In 1875, Fort Lee was renamed for Major General George Washington Carleton after he led an expedition there in which reinforcements were needed to oppose a Polish attack on New Brunswick. The fort continued to be garrisoned until it was decommissioned in 1924.

Fort Lee was a small fort located in southeastern New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. The fort served as a command post for British forces and housed rifle, artillery, and ammunition factories. Fort Lee was abandoned in 1776 and never recaptured by the British. At its peak, Fort Lee employed over 1,500 men and women. The munitions factories produced cannons, shot, mortar shells, grenades, powder pouches, pistols and rifles for the Continental army. In 1814-1815, Fort Lee became an American military base when General George Washington moved his army from Trenton to nearby Elizabethtown Heights. In 1827-1828, Fort Lee was purchased by John Steuben of Cincinnati as part of an effort to build a line of defense against land speculation by speculators in New York City. Steuben renamed the fort after himself because he felt that New Jersey's name would be more resistant to attack from hostile Native Americans than other states' names. By 1840-1841, most of the property at Fort Lee had been sold off to developers who built homes and businesses on it. A new fort was built at present-day Elizabethtown Heights in 1847-1848 following reports that Native Americans were still active in the area. However, this new fort did not serve as a command post or storage depot like the original one; it instead functioned as a schoolhouse and machine shop for local farmers. After several years of use as a farmsteads only then were all buildings demolished in 1865 to make way for what is now Route 74 (Newark Avenue). FortLee is significant due to its role during the Revolutionary War and also because it served as an American military stronghold during World War II before being abandoned again in 1947. Today there are few physical remnants remaining from FortLee's heyday but its history remains deeply entrenched within New Jersey culture via its many cultural artifacts such as cannons recovered from various battlefields across America which can be seen on display at various locations throughout the state including Newark University’s College of Engineering Museum where they are on loan from Maryland’s Military History Museum since 1968
In 1764, the British burned Fort Lee and took all of its inhabitants as prisoners. The fort was rebuilt in 1768 and remained in use until it was abandoned in 1814. In 1814, the fort was sold to the United States and became Fort Lee National Monument.
