After three months of hard fighting Fort Lee surrendered on February 13th following an exchange of fire between British regulars and Hessian mercenaries that left over 100 Americans dead or wounded including Major General Nathanael Greene who later described it as "the most bloody engagement I ever saw". At this point only six men out of a complement of 350 were still alive inside the walls when they capitulated; 400 more had been killed outside since the beginning of hostilities In total about 1,500 people died from combat withinFort Lees walls-a figure that does not include those killed by Native Americans living nearby or by disease introduced during the war
