Fort Lee was a small military post located in the town of Fort Lee, New Jersey. It was primarily used as a garrison and training ground for riflemen and artillery troops during the American Revolution. The fortifications were built between 1777 and 1780 to protect the town from British forces. The site today is home to the Fort Lee Museum. The first permanent white settlers in what is now Fort Lee arrived in 1664, when Englishman Robert Treatt purchased land east of present-day Fort Lee from Dutch colonists. In 1668, Dutch explorer Abraham Ortelius explored what is now New Jersey and found much interest in purchasing land there including some tracts for sale to Englishmen. However, it wasn’t until 1674 that French traders began trading with New Netherland residents on the Monmouth River. That year, Pierre-André Le Moyne founded Belle Glade plantation near what is now South Brunswick Township and offered land to English settlers for $1 per acre (0.50 hectares). In 1675, John Tory erected a stockade around his plantation which became known as Battery Park after Tory's second wife – who also bore him two children – Blanche de la Tour de France and Jacques-Cartier de la Tour d'Aiguillon (the original name of Battery Park). In 1702, George Washington visited Belle Glade plantation while on his way westward along the Delaware River. While at battery park he noted that “a very excellent stream ran through it” which later became known as run by General Howe during his battle against Washington at Morristown Heights on October 14th,. After their victory over Washington at Yorktown General Howe ordered all batteries destroyed so as not to give away too much information about British positions on Long Island or Staten Island which could have been used against them should they ever again be attempted by those forces under his command while they were retreating back across these waters.. In 1776, following the Siege of Trenton by American forces under George Washington, Captain John Forbes decided to build a temporary post within easy reach of Trenton Liberty Hall where he could store goods needed for siege operations such as munitions and foodstuff before moving them downriver into Christie County towards Princeton where they would be unloaded onto flatboats waiting offshore for transport back upriver .. . Upon learning of Patriot activity around Trenton he increased security measures around his new post but did not actually leave it until September 3rd when word reached him that Hessian soldiers had crossed over into north Jersey uninvited .. . On September 5th Forbes wrote back to Philadelphia complaining about lack of response from authorities about possible hostile activities taking place inside Trenton .. . Despite this warning Forbes failed to provide adequate security for his new post resulting in numerous thefts/burglaries throughout October .. . A detachment under Lieutenant Colonel Ebenezer Pennington arrived at Fortress StanhopeNovember 2nd but no action occurred until November 10th when Lieutenant Colonel Pennington discovered militia force advancing southwards behind schedule while trying unsuccessfullyto cross Runnemede Creek ......Pennington called off hostilities elections day November 13th without significantly affecting troop strengths .......The final tally shows only six militiamen killed ++ four wounded ++ one missing ++ three captured ..............Of particular interest are three Revolutionary War era cannons salvaged from an old salt mine near Union Mills creek; these cannons appear never before having been seen outside of northeastern Pennsylvania

Fort Lee was used as a training ground for new recruits into the British army during the War of 1812 although no actual fighting took place there that year. It also served as headquarters for various military campaigns throughout northeastern United States including operations against Native Americans near Saratoga Springs, New York; Upper Canada; and Florida during 1813–1814. After its abandonment, Fort Lee was used as a dumpster landfill until 1959 when it was donated to Fort Lee Park District by Mayor Robert Fenton III under auspices of Monmouth County Parks & Recreation Department . In 1967-1968, work began on restoring portions of Fort Lee which included renovating buildings inside and outside the prison walls using design principles pioneered at Kings College London’s Central School of Artillery where classes had been given on artillery architecture since 1856 thereby helping provide instruction for future generals who would need such knowledge while serving within American armies both before and after Independence . Although not complete until 1978, restoration work has resulted in creating an interpretive center which tellsthe story of how these defenses changed over time from simple stockade type defenses around 1800s into more complex systems with accompanying infrastructure beginning ca1780s
