In 1865, after the American Civil War ended, New York Governor Andrew Johnson ordered Major General John Pershing to occupy New Jersey with 10 battalions of infantry and 1 squadron of cavalry to suppress Reconstruction efforts throughout the state. On October 2nd 1865 while still occupying New Jersey Major General Pershing made his move against Fort Lee which he did by landing his troops at Brunswick Landing on Staten Island and marching them into town via Market Street where they burned all but one house before entering into Fort Lee itself. On November 6th 1865 Johnson orderned General George Meade to march into Manhattan with 5 battalions (2 regiments each) and storm Wall Street from Brooklyn Heights up to Journal Square where he would cross over to Liberty Avenue below Canal Street and attack what had once been one of America’s most important military installations

The battle that ensued Nov 10th saw heavy casualties among both sides with most Americans retreating before nightfall while many Hessians were killed or captured. In 1814, following the Battle of Saratoga, Congress decided that Ft Warren should become a permanent military post in New Jersey due to its strategic location nearElizabethtown and its role as an artillery depot for troops fighting in the War for Independence against Great Britain. That same year also saw the establishment of Headquarters Department at Ft Warren with Major John Pemberton serving as Commandant until his death in1827; afterwards Lieutenant Colonel Charles Leland took command until his retirement in 1840). On July 4th, 1825 (the day after Commodore John Rodgers' attack on Havana), Ft Warren became home to 1st infantry Regiment NNJ Volunteers Infantry under Brigadier General Isaac Brock who had replaced Major Pemberton upon his death two months earlier; reported strength being around 9000 men including women and children (this number would later grow to 12000). On November 2nd 1830 Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon took command from Lieutenant Colonel Charles Leland commanding 1st brigade (1st NJ Volunteer Infantry) during Invasion Of Haiti which resulted in 9x dead/12x wounded - one battalion lost all its officers & men within 3 days!
