Fort Lee was founded by General John Lambert in 1777 as a British fort on the Jersey shore. The fort saw action during the American Revolution, and was soon renamed Fort Lee after George Washington became Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. In 1814, Fort Lee became an infantry brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brockman, which served with distinction in the War of 1812. In 1815, Fort Lee fell to the Americans during the Battle of Saratoga, and it remained an American stronghold until its surrender in 1945. After World War II, Fort Lee was abandoned and sit unused for many years. However, over time it has been restoration and reopened as a museum dedicated to gun targets history. Today, Fort Lee is home to a number of interactive exhibits about military firearms and target shooting culture from different periods.

Fort Lee was a small fort located on the southern tip of Manhattan in Fort Lee Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. It was established in 1777 by General George Washington as part of his defenses against an anticipated attack from France. The fort served as a garrison until 1785 and then underwent several renovations and modifications before being abandoned in 1814. The first permanent settler in Fort Lee was Nicholas Tappan, who arrived in 1664. A second settler, John Doane, arrived the following year and erected a log cabin on the site which became known as Doane's House. The first school in Fort Lee was built at this location in 1668 by Reverend Ebenezer Sprague. In 1702, Colonel Abraham Gunther built a small blockhouse on the site which housed two cannons and became known as Gunther's Blockhouse. In 1776, when Fort Lee was established as part of George Washington's defense against an anticipated French attack, it consisted of about 20 buildings including three barracks for 1,500 men each and four more for women and children. Of these buildings only six remain today: Anold Hall (1777), Barracks (1787-1814), Armory (1814-1815), Carpenter's Blocks (1782-1800), Nicholas Tappan House (1664-1693) and Doctor Shippen's Physick School Building (1702). The fort also contained two cannonballs that were melted down to create cannon powder during the American Revolution. The fort remained under military jurisdiction until 1814 when it passed into civilian control with Lieutenant Colonel James Clinton taking command. In 1815 the fort fell victim to an arsonist's attempt at destruction which resulted in $2 million worth of damage being caused to its infrastructure including its cannons and munitions storage depot becoming oxidized goods that lay derelict for many years until they were finally salvaged and repaired in 2006-2007 by Restoration Associates Incorporated under contract from Army Corps of Engineers New York State Division headquartered at One Pentagon Place NW under direction of Inspector General Michael L’Estrange III amp; Assistant Inspector General Kenneth Kovalich having primary responsibility for Historic Preservation
