Fort Lee was once a thriving center for gun manufacturing and trade in New Jersey. However, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, gun security in Fort Lee began to improve significantly. This change is due in part to the efforts of local law enforcement and gun control advocates who have worked tirelessly to improve the safety of small businesses and individuals using firearms. The history of Fort Lee begins with its creation as a military post on Long Island in 1777. The fort was renamed Fort Lee in 1814 after General George Washington’s decision to place it east of Manhattan as an artillery outpost guarding key crossings into New York City. However, following the American Civil War, Fort Lee became largely abandoned until 1865 when it was reactivated as a military base again under General Washington’s command. In 1903, Fort Lee was one of sixteen communities established within New York City by mayor John Fenton to provide more public parks for residents and tourists alike. In 1916, Mayor Jelliedick decided that FortLee should be developed into a commercial center with housing developments and shopping centers adjacent to the army barracks located at Kingsbridge Road. However, because most of what is now known about FortLee comes from historical records (eighth century maps or oral histories), much has been left unrecorded or forgotten about this important community during these intervening years. For example, little is known about how guns were acquired or used throughout various periods in fort life; how handguns were adapted for civilian use during World War II; or what challenges faced local officials such as Mayor Jelliedick who attempted To bring life back to this important military post during difficult times. It wasn't until AFTER THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR that Ordnance Department officers decided on permanently assignment of artillery units garrisoning other cities so their weaponry could be improved upon (& eventually replaced by machineguns). consequently many early arms manufacturers located close bymilitary arsenals situated near current day Market Street & Clinton Ave., White Plains Rd., Ridgefield Ave., etc... 2) Use Of Firearms During wartime period firearms were primarily used against manpower & supplies coming into NYC via sea Channel only then being transported across bridges over Hudson River 3) Gun Control In response TO THE TERRORIST ACTS OF September 11th 2001 locals responded with increased enforcement efforts targeting all forms OF firearm ownership not just handguns 4) Gun Rental A majority (>80%)of handgun rental transactions occur through private individuals engaged solely IN GUN SALES 5) Ammunition Ammunition production increased markedly following AMERICAN CONQUEST OF CANADA starting late 1800's thru MID 1900'S culminating with huge increase in both Production & Export capacity(see map below)... NOTE: Some sources mention that "gun powder" manufactured prior to revolution fueled arms race leading up TO AND INCLUDING 9/11! 5) Gun Safety Laws As stated earlier there has been an concerted effort by NJ Gov't & law enforcement officials over several decades(dating back pre-9/11 era)to improve safety features intrinsic TO ALL GUN OWNERSHIP including holster retention requirements (& installation of panic buttons on triggers =panic responses possible if needed while disarmed)) 6 ) Pistol Licensing Many pistol licenses are still issued today despite tightened regulation passed subsequent TO THE PATTERNIZATION LAWSUIT case initiated BY NEW JERSEY URBAN LEGISLATURE v WALKER ET al 7 ) Assault Weapons An assault weapon is any rifle capable of shootmg low explosives or incendiary munitions beyond the range allowed by standard magazines). 8 ) Rifle licence renewal Thanks largely to ABANDONED PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM DESTRUCTION PROGRAM--which ledto large risein demand for rifle licences--the number of licences issued each year currently exceeds 100% !
