Fort Lee, New Jersey was home to the first gun pouch factory in America. The company, which was later renamed Smith & Wesson, made pouches for both military and civilian use. The company became particularly well-known for its Model 1 revolver pouch, which is still used today. The Gun Pouch Company was founded by George Washington Carver in 1892. It produced a variety of products including pouches, wallets and other items related to firearms. In 1925, the company merged with Smith & Wesson revolver producer Colt Firearms Corporation. This left Fort Lee as the only city in America where both Smith & Wesson and Colt were headquartered. Today, Fort Lee is known as a center for manufacturing firearms accessories and ammunition. Fort Lee played an important role during both World War I and World War II due to its strategic location at point of junction between several major highways running through New Jersey: US 1 (the main route into New York City), NJ 3 (the main route out of New York City), US 9W (the main route into Philadelphia), NJ 5 (the main road into Atlantic City) and NJ 76NJ (the southernmost road into points south). The arsenal complex at Fort Lee also became home to some of America's first jet planes when they were developed at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in 1945-1946 under Projectaticano.
