Fort Lee was a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States before the American Revolution. The town was founded by English colonists in 1702 as West Point on the site of an earlier Indian village. The British garrison at Fort Lee during the revolution consisted of about fifty men. The Revolutionary War began with a siege of Fort Stanwix by General George Washington's army on September 14, 1775. On October 2, 1775, when Massachusetts forces attacked and destroyed the fortifications at West Point, they also captured two hundred barrels of powder and munitions that had been hidden there. This event became known as "The Destruction of Fort Lee." In 1777, Patriot forces burned down WestPoint buildings to prevent British occupation. In 1800, while Fort Lee remained under British control until 1812 (when it reverted to American control), it was renamed "New York Heights."
