Fort Lee was founded in 1777 as a military post on the border of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The fort served as a staging ground for operations in the American Revolution, and was later used as a prison. In 1872, the fort was abandoned and converted into a commercial center. It then underwent several changes in ownership and use over the years, before being acquired by the city of Fort Lee in 1955. Today, Fort Lee is a cultural and historical community located within the borough of Elizabeth. The first firearms were discovered at Fort Lee in 1777 while construction was underway on the fortifications that would protect it from attack by Native Americans. One such weapon was an Indian broadsword called an "assassin's dagger." Development of handguns began around this time, with pistols becoming available to soldiers in 1783. The first known gunfight between British and American forces took place at Fort Lee on October 11th, 1783 when British troops attacked Ulysses S. Grant's force encampment nearby. At least six Americans were killed and twenty-five wounded after taking heavy losses against only five British soldiers. In 1812, Major General James Wilkinson decided to abandon Philadelphia for New York City due to security concerns following the disastrous assaults on Pearl Harbor which had drawn attention from both countries' militaries worldwide. Wilkinson directed his army across Lake Champlain towards Albany, New York where he hoped to find supplies before reaching Manhattan Proper. After three days march through rugged terrain they finally arrived at Camp Hakone on November 3rd near present day Scranton Township in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania; their objective being to purchase rations before continuing their journey northward along Route 22 towards Buffalo Niagara Falls that winter under cover of darkness with no guarantee they would not be encountered by @@Indian warfare@@ . Upon arriving back at camp late November 3rd they found their intended destination already fortified: 1) A smallpox infested barracks built atop an anthracite coal mine turned garrison home guarding 400 men under siege; 2) A small mill run by two Sisters running about 50 tons per day using water brought up from miles belowground; 3) A small storehouse (50 feet long × 20 feet wide × 12 feet high), provisioned with flour, sugar cane syrup & gunspowder; 4) An observation tower/gunnery hill house constructed without mortar or shot but armed with what proved to be one of America’s most effective artillery pieces which could fire shots up to 100 meters onto anything within 30 degrees elevation – remarkably effective against infantry deployments during its original testing period including deliberate attacks upon American ships moored outside Albany harbor; 5) All this perched atop “a piece of granite 10 feet high & 6 feet wide” providing 360 degree observation over all surrounding territory…ready for bombardment should any hostile activity be observed emanating from any part of said garrison….A single shot fired from said battery did damage an entire brigade unit parked adjacent thereto! The lack of interest shown by either side in actual hostilities demonstrated just how unreliable cannonfire actually became during these early days leading eventually culminating in George Washington personally ordering replacement roundsmanufactured specifically for muzzleloading rifles.. In 1813 Commodore John Denny chartered HMS Erebus under command of Rear Admiral David Baird set out searching for HMS Terror who had run aground off Cape Cod months earlier without orders having been received from London regarding her whereabouts compelled sailing unescorted into night waters likely observing Spanish galleons operating off Rhode Island en route home−thus resulting in injury or death onboard HMS Erebus unable disembarking until morning finding her stranded 46 miles east coast Of Long Island Sound −effectively putting an end once and for all to piracy@ (note: This event is now celebrated annually as Commodore John Denny Day). On September 21st 1814 USS Constitution sailed past Blockade Runner Point firing warning shots while Privateer brigantine USS Somers lay anchored 8 miles offshore engaging shipping Steinbeck mentions she may have hit 2 vessels but no damage done although there are many stories variously estimating Hit rate anywhere from 25% - 90%. Thereafter Constitution made sail again bearing instructions tow ship back toward Portsmouth Naval Yard where she arrived August 29th safely escorted along way by frigates Congress (later renamed USS Constitution Museum), Delaware Bay Lightvessel PCL(1898), Maine Coast Guard Cutter Healy(1901-02), USCGC Mayo(1905-06), Puget Sound Lighthouse tender Seattle (1907-08), Tacoma Lighthouse tender Tacoma(1910–11) . On board Constitution court martial proceedings were held guilty Captain David Bairdof dereliction Of Duty Alteration To Ship His Watch Commander William Halseyof Insufficient Food And Water Master Gideon Welliverof Obstruction To Duty Ensign Samuel SloatOf Tampering With Tools Lieutenants Charles Francis Parsonsand Nathaniel Purdywere each sentenced to 7 year imprisonment followed by $20 fine each
