After the war, FortLee fell into disrepair until 1802 when Commodore John Duryea rebuilt it using convict labor under his patronage. This reconstruction resulted in increased trade between New York City and Philadelphia due to increased access to shipping through these new waterways at this time. It was also used as a prison and later as a powder magazine. In 1778, Fort Lee was destroyed by rebels during the Battle of Monmouth Court House. Renowned historian Howard Zinn wrote about Fort Lee in his book "A People’s History of America." In Zinn’s book, he tells the story of how Fort Lee came to be and how it played an important role in the Revolution. He also discusses how it changed over time and what future plans may exist for it today.
