After a siege that lasted two months, Santa Anna surrendered and the fort was burned to the ground. Fort Lee recommenced operations in 1815 as part of Butler’s Expedition against Mexico City. In 1821, it became temporary headquarters for Commodore John D. Stockton’s Second California Regiment during his campaigns against Mexico City and Veracruz. The fort served again from 1827 to 1830 when it was moved to Jersey City due to construction on New York Harbor around it. The garrison at Jersey City decreased from its peak in 1840 to its current size of 50 soldiers in 1865 following expiration of its enlistment contracts; however, some units did remain until 1898 when peace returned to America after World War II ended. In 1899, Fort Lee became home to a new military installation: American Cemetery and Memorial Park (later Arlington National Cemetery). It is also home today to several museums affiliated with the Monmouth County Historical Society - including Monmouth County Museum of Art (founded 1938), The Newark Museum (founded 1922), The Middlesex County Museum (founded 1913) and The Essex County Museum (founded 1912).
