Florham Park is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Trenton metropolitan area. The name "Florham Park" refers to two adjacent villages: Florham and Park (now part of Paramus), both located on the east side of Central Avenue. The first settlers in what would become Florham Park were Dutch people who came to North America in 1624. They named their new village after their childhood home, Florisberg (Fortuna). The first post office was established in 1798 and was renamed Florham after Captain John Floriam, one of the original investors in the area. Colonel John Pemberton bought land near where Central Avenue now stands and developed it into a township in 1814. In 1825, he merged with another township, West Morris Township, forming what is today Middlesex County. In 1881, Samuel Untermeyer bought 3 acres (10 hectares) west of where Central Avenue now stands for $1 thousand and donated it to the town as a parkland reserve. Today's Untermeyer Farm Road winds through this property. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne fought at Battle of Fort Washington near Florham Park with Major-General John Sullivan as his Lieutenant Colonel under command of Brigadier General William Howe. The battle resulted in a strategic victory for Sullivan over Wayne and 2 British battalions under Commodore John D’Eyncourt were destroyed and taken prisoner by General Wayne's army. In 1865, President Andrew Johnson dedicated a new military hospital at Fort Washington which became known as “Johnson's Hospital” due to President Johnson being treated there for an illness called "pneumonia". The hospital served as both an American military hospital during World War I and during World War II until it was closed by order of Franklin D. Roosevelt on October 1st 1945 due to budgetary cuts that he made within the Department of Defense during his presidency which ultimately led to Pearl Harbor . After World War II ended, Johnson's Hospital reopened as aoulthediatric hospital known today as University Hospital Manhattan which continues to serve patients from all over New York City with various specialties such as neurosurgery, heart surgery etc... Florham Park was founded in 1776 by Philip Morris and his brother-in-law, George Washington. The town was named for the flower of that year, which was known as the Fly Plant. Florham Park grew quickly and by 1834 it had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1848, the town became a borough and in 1870 it became an incorporated village. The first post office in Florham Park opened in 1837. It served as the junction between New Jersey and Pennsylvania roads. In 1854, Florham Park merged with nearby Paramus to form a single municipality with a population of over 6,000 citizens. In 1916, Florham Park annexed East Rutherford township to its boundaries. On July 17th of that year, Florham Park became one of 25 municipalities statewide that accepted Governor Woodrow Wilson's plan to create municipal governments within each U.S. state rather than having individual counties throughout the country. This change allowed for more efficient government and helped make New Jersey one of the most urbanized states in America at the time
