Fairview is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The first European to sight FairVIEW was Lieutenant James Cook on July 29th 1778 while sailing along the Cape May Peninsula. Cook named it after Captain John Fairbrother of HMS "Beacon" who had been his navigator and mentor during the Suppression of Tippecanoe Expedition in 1775-76. At high water mark #1 on July 3rd 1814, Samuel Morse sent a wire from Bordentown to Philadelphia which run as follows: "George Washington has arrived at Bordentown". This event helped set off what would become known as America's first electronic mail system. On October 14th 1827, Elijah Woods established a sawmill and gristmill on the riverside at what is now called Woodstown Township. The mill continued operation until 1951 when it was destroyed by a fire. In 1906, FairVIEW became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police department which still exists today. In 1916, FairVIEW became one of thirteen municipalities within Bergen County that were merged into the new Municipal Borough of Northvale; this change took effect on January 1st 1917 - also becoming an incorporated municipality under that name (though still governed by municipal trustees).
