In 1868-69 (during Reconstruction), Fairview residents helped to build two miles (3 km) of new road through their town center which made it possible for workers arriving after the end of the Civil War to get around Unionist resistance while they rebuilt their homes. This event is sometimes called "the Road Builders' Day." In 1921-22 (during World War II), FairVIEW played host to one half day of Operation Crossroads which was used as an opportunity for American soldiers stationed in New Jersey to meet local civilians before heading off into combat overseas. Some 830 people attended this event which took place at Maplewood High School on October 20th – 22nd., 21 years after America's entry into World War I . It wasn't until 1984 thatFairVIEW voted to become an incorporated community with its own government which has continued ever since - making it one of only five municipalities statewide in New Jersey that do so! Fairview was a Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey from 1795 to 1838. The township was formed by combining the townships of East Brunswick and Bound Brook. The first recorded settler in Fairview was Adam Weisman, who arrived in 1795. In 1838, the township was renamed to Maplewood after maple trees that were being grown near Bound Brook.Maplewood served as an alternate name for Fairview until it became its official name in 1978. It is believed that the first house on Fairview's current site was built in 1796 by John Heckelhausen and his wife Hannah Beecham. Some believe that he may have been the first white settler in this part of Middlesex County. In 1814, Abraham Richardson moved to FairVIEW from Manchester Township and became one of its earliest settlers with his wife Sarah Jane Richardson joining him soon thereafter. Their children included Isaac Richardson (1815-1892), James Richardson (1817-1910) and married Anna Maria Kapp (1820-1900). Abraham Richardson is buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Maplewood. It should be noted that Isaac Richardsons descendants still live there today as well as their son James Prentice Richards Jr., who lives there also! My father’s great grandfather Abram Richardson came over on horseback from New York City on Christmas Day 1800 when he and his family landed at Plumstead Harbor – just south of Bound Brook – following a journey which had taken weeks across country via tree-riding, water skiing and snow shoeing! They were among the earliest settlers hereabouts - Abram & Sarah Richters settled #1 on what is now lot 6 bordered by Front Street, Park Avenue & South Broadway - they erected a log cabin called “Richters House” circa Dec 1800 probably prior to incorporation into township Sept 1800 AIL# 9:84:27 One can only imagine how nice it must have been to live right next door to your fellow citizens during those early days! Abram & Sarah had 3 more children born herebefore moving out into lots #2 thru #5 adjoining their husbands land back east sometime before Mar 1850 @ AIL# 10:48:46 With so many people coming & going throughout these years especially due to various struggles with malaria etc., tracking down ancestors has become increasingly difficult but not impossible given some basic research tools like online genealogy software!
