Fairview is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the borough had a population of 28,874. It was formed from part of Ridgewood on March 1, 1909. The name Fairview is derived from "Faire View," which is mentioned in an early map of the area and means "a view looking to the fairgrounds." The first European settlers in what is now Fairview were Dutch farmers who arrived during the 16th century. In 1714, they founded a farmstead at present-day Ridgewood and named it Fort Orange after their general Sir George Ongerus (1685–1748). By 1729, all Dutch colonists had left for good except for a few dozen men and women who continued to live on Fort Orange until 1802 when they sold it to Englishman John Woolridge under consideration of purchasing land east of Hackensack River. In 1803, Woolridge purchased 2,000 acres (820 hectares) southeast of Hackensack River from two brothers by the name of Livingston and erected a stockade there called Fort Gloucester. He also built three other stone fortifications: one near what is now East 4th Street and Prospect Avenue; another southwest of Center Road near what is now West 3rd Street; and another northwest of Interstate 95 between Park Boulevard and Montrose Avenue. The Livingston brothers were later convicted of embezzlement and served time in prison before being released on bond in 1809. They donated their land south of Hackensack River to form Ridgewood Township with its own government but retained ownership over Fort Gloucester . On March 1, 1909 – as part as part of Borough formation – Fairview took its name from nearby Ridgewood . In 1917 Fairview opened its first public library which was located at 222 South Spring Street (). On October 29 Of that year Borough President Harry Siegel announced that due to budget cuts he would close both libraries effective November 30th because “the financial situation has become so critical that we could not maintain them without putting additional strain on our services” However despite these closures several residents spoke out against this decision stating that they felt they were necessary given the large number students attending local schools which were located just outside town limits
The area now known as Fairview was originally part of Jersey City. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1624, and the English soon after. In 1764, Fairview became a part of Bergen County. During the Revolutionary War, many New Yorkers fought on the British side and were rewarded with land in Fairview. The community prospered during the war, but it declined afterindependence came about in 1783. However, it slowly regained its former prosperity throughout the 19th century thanks to its location and access to transportation. In 1892, Fairview became a borough withinNew York City.
